Girl Party Ideas...
I'm inviting some close friends over to celebrate one of my dearest pal's birthday. We are all liberal, all feminists, and all too far along in life to celebrate the year of our birthday but grateful to celebrate ANY birthday. We are playing poker and I'm trying to come up with a playtime menu for us based on girl's play--

So far, I'm planning Barbie-Q as a main course with Mud Pies for dessert. Anyone have any clever ideas? Thanks! :loveya:

1. BBQ is a bad idea unless you're doing pulled pork (or other meat)
in biscuits. Poker parties demand finger food that won't end up on the cards.

2. I was thinking of wings for the bbq.
I have a recipe that turns out dry instead of goopy, but I love the idea of biscuits and pulled pork. :yum: Also found a recipe for Pigs in a Bank Roll and Texas Hold'em Turnovers. I'm sure I will customize the recipes, but I do want a clever menu. Full House Salad? I'm having fun already. Thanks, Warpy!

4. Wings will be kind of sticky
on the fingers, even if the coating is drier. While this isn't very creative, you might want to see if you can fine large cookie cutters in the shape of the suits and use they to cut shaped sandwiches of some kind.

Not in keeping with the theme necessarily, but I would probably make a large Italian sub and cut it into pieces that would be easy to hold, maybe two inches.

All the guys I've ever know who had poker games always included cigar smoking with the evenings enjoyments. You could always look for those cheap chocolate cigars that folks give out at baby time and take the "It's a girl!" label off.

5. I had forgotten about the Suit Sandwiches.
It would bring back fond card playing memories for most of us who will be at this table. I like the idea of the cigars, too! Maybe "Hold 'Em/Fold 'Em" sandwiches.... Our group just waved bye-bye to a couple whose conservative husband (a control FREAK) insisted that the big Italian combo was the ONLY food suitable for any and every party. We are all relieved NOT to have a sub these days. They recently moved to FL where they will find more kindred spirits. They were miserable being here in Bright Blue New York!

7. how about muffaletta?
I made those at New Years and they were quite well received. You make an olive salad and layer it into hollowed out bread loaf with various meats and cheeses, then weight it down for some hours so that it's pressed, then cut it into wedges. I'll find the recipe if that interests you. A New Orleans classic.

And lord almighty, why not get the girls some real cigars? Many women today smoke those daintier varieties.

I'm also thinking scotch eggs and stuffed cherry tomatoes, for some reason.

8. My Thai cookbook has a recipe for Thai flavored (Scotch) eggs that was calling
to me yesterday. I also have a recipe for cherry tomatoes stuffed with vodka jello shots and both of those would go over well with my group. Muffeletta is out since I can't eat cheese without suffering. I can tolerate a few bites of high fat cheeses like Brie or Parmesan, but I don't want to spend the evening being uncomfortable or on meds. I lived in NOLA in the early 70's and enjoyed muffeletta there. I didn't develop lactose intolerance until I was in my 30s. I think I'll get both kinds of cigars! Thanks for the suggestions, grasswire. I appreciate it. :hi:

6. My niece's best party treats ever...her idea.
Edited on Mon Sep-01-08 08:35 PM by Dover
All kinds of fruits, the more exotic the better, chopped into bite sizes (mangos, pineapple, strawberries, etc). Toothpicks and melted chocolate for dipping. YUM!

She decided on that instead of cake and it was a very big hit. Something about girls and warm chocolate...lol!

The year before was a big hit too (she is very creative). They made several small cakes (6" diameter) and mixed frosting with various food colorings just like paint. Then they had a
contest to see who created the best "painting" /picture on their cakes. They had a theme, but
I've forgotten what it was. Maybe they each worked in the style of a famous painter or something like that.

Another year they all painted her bedroom walls....mod 60's retro. Looked great!

9. Fruits are always good. For a card party I could thread them on
skewers. Your niece sounds like a highly creative individual, but I live in an apartment and I can't imagine what the landlord would say if we all got loaded and started painting the walls! The warm chocolate dipping sauce I'll save for another time...I'm hoping that the middle of the table will be occupied with antes and such! Thanks!

10. This really doesn't go with your theme

but it's always a really big hit when I take it to gatherings. I even get special requests for it when we're invited to pot lucks. It really is an awesome recipe.

Salsa di Parmigiano
http://www.napastyle.com/recipe/recipe.jsp?productId=2610

Ingredients

Serves: 2+ Cups

8 ounces Parmesan cheese, broken into 1" chunks
8 ounces Asiago cheese, broken into 1" chunks
1 tablespoon chopped garlic
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
2 tablespoons chopped basil
2 tablespoons chopped scallions
1 teaspoon pepper flakes
1-1/2 cups extra-virgin olive oil
Directions
Place all of the ingredients in the bowl of a food processor. Pulse for about 10 seconds, to break the cheese into small granules. (Use a rubber spatula to scrape down and recombine between every couple of pulses.)

Transfer the salsa to a sealed container and refrigerate for up to a week. Bring to room temperature before serving.

I've used provolone in it when I couldn't find asiago and it was still incredibly delicious!

Hope the party's a real blast! :hi:

11. Thanks, hippywife!
I bet you are popular on the pot-luck circuit. Your recipe should have those girls purring. I've been lucky to get some great suggestions in this forum. I've given up on trying to force the theme into the food. I can call the recipes anything I want for the party; I'll just tag on gambling terms! The food has to be delicious first and foremost and I knew everyone here in C&B would 'get' that criteria. You've all been a great help. :hi:
