After reading about ENGLISH TOAST- I was wondering-
Does anyone remember way back when Melba toast used to be so popular.
I always keep some in the pantry, just slice a regular piece of bread
lenghtwise-carefully- and put it in the oven about 20 minutes to crisp.
It keeps forever and stays crunchy and crispy.

1. I sure do but haven't had it in a while
Mom always kept it on hand. But we never made it ourselves. It sounds so easy. Does it really shrink down skinny like the store bought kind?

And one last question - what brand of bread do you like to use?

:hi:

2. My first attempt at making bread in 1970 was a failure
because the loaf didn't rise and came out nearly as dense as a brick.

However, the flavor was fantastic.

I sliced it thinly and made the best Melba toast I've ever had.

You need a dense bread with a fine grain sliced very thin to make the real thing.

However, thinly sliced bread with a looser crumb will work, give you the crispness and flavor. It will just leak if you spread anything on it.
