So, I bought a pound of beans for $5
At my local farmers market, a local farmer has been selling heirloom dried beans. I resisted for 4 months, but I bought them Sunday. I bought the variety that 'has been found in Mexican tombs dating from 500 BC.' I just made a batch and they do taste different than other beans. First, they didn't break up but kept their shape. Second, they have a more 'meaty' texture. Third, they have a good taste. I didn't add any salt or boullion as suggested. I found I needed to add some salt even though it wasn't recommended. I just think it's cool to have products that are lost on a commercial market but local farmers are keeping the gene pool alive.

The guy selling them to me spent most of his sales pitch telling me how to grow them. Then he caught himself and started to sell his product.

I bought 'scarlet runner.'

2. I bought them at my local farmer's markets
and they are local. They have a website:

www.ranchogordo.com

I'll buy them again. They sell about 10 varieties and I'm curious what other varieties taste like.
