I finally bought a stove today
you may remember my frustration

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=236&topic_id=56588

got a GREAT deal too, $699 for what appears to be a 2007 model. I think that because the instruction manual is dated 2006.

but it's got nice heavy grates with gray porcelain, has what Frigidaire calls "Speed Bake" convection system, two burners (9500BTU) the same on one side for my griddle and a simmer (4500BTU) and PowerPlus (14000BTU) on the other

has my drawer on the bottom for the cast iron and self clean, delayed and timed bake features.

I wasn't even shopping for one today, Mr. K was in paying for our new DVD player and I was just wandering around the store

Here's what it looks like and a link to all the "stuff"

and the best part?? I bought it from my local Mom & Pop shop :woohoo:

1. Congrats! I think this one met your needs

(although it's hard to tell from the picture) but I'll guess the oven controls are on the top, but the burner controls are in front.

That avoids the problem of setting your sleeve on fire controlling the burners, while still giving you all other functionality on the top panel.

Enjoy!

(personally, though, I hate the idea of gas appliances - they weird me out - too many horror stories growing up, I guess. I have a gas grill outside, not a problem, but gas lines in the house, although I know things are very safe now - I just can't get comfortable with that).

2. I LOVE LOVE LOVE my gas stove
it was hell for 9 years in PHX when I had electric.

when I bought the house in CA one of the first things I did was have a gas line run into the kitchen for a great old vintage stove I found

but this one is good and Warpy reminded me of the mess top controls would cause. then I realized the new stove they installed in the lunch room at work had that same slanted front and she was right (as she usually is) those controls are a mess whenever anyone uses the stove top

I'll give you guys a better report next week once they get it here and installed

BTW, how are you? doing better I hope......

3. Still haven't been in for surgery

Changed hospitals. Just had a CAT scan the other day, PET scan scheduled for Monday. These guys are moving quick, not letting things drop through the cracks.

5. I am sooooo releaved to hear that!
I was hoping you'd share a little news about what's been going on. If you don't want to post all the gory details here, you know how to find me.

6. No gory details yet.

My platelet count is up, not where it should be, but at least it's moving in the right direction, so that's good (as opposed to "dropping like a rock" as I was told). They ordered scans since no one at the other place bothered to do any scans since my original diagnosis, over six months ago.

If it all comes out okay, I'll be all right with it, but if it's metastasized because they dropped the ball, I'll be pissed (or dead).

The good thing about a PET scan? Aside from not having to pre-drink any barium crap, you shouldn't exert yourself in anyway (keep quiet) for the 24 hours previous. So Sunday truly will be a day of rest. No cleaning up the yeard. For that, I'll take a PET scan every 48 hours - doctor's orders!

Oddly enough, under examples of exertion they list "excessive talking". I'm not a chatterbox, so it doesn't apply, but I thought it was a weird listing.

I think the whole point is to keep the body's metabolism as low as possible (because PET scans measure glucose use). I guess some people get worked up talking.

I have to drive to pick up my son, but that's the only real activity I'm obligated for for that day.

My wife wanted to make Sunday a Spring clean-up day and finally I had official medical instructions to not do it! Ah, the little joys... of course, I'd rather clean up than have cancer, but if I'm going to have cancer, I'm quite happy getting out of spring clean-up (at least this weekend). :)

That's great that the platelet count is heading the right direction.

13. Advice: let your wife do the driving
while you sit passively with your eyes closed, lest you work yourself up backseat driving.

They really don't want you to do much of anything.

It's going to be tough on the kiddo with Daddy on the couch, no roughhousing or even watching sports that require jumping up and cheering.

The best way to prepare for a PET scan is to spend the day in bed, watching DVDs.

14. Well, he just turn 13

He's not jumping on me any more (thankfully).

It was cute when he was four, but it'd be painful nowadays. :)

4. Glad you finally settled on something that
has what you were looking for. It's really funny but that is the exact one I have except it doesn't have all the convection, delay, and self cleaning bells and whistles. My burner grates are black but otherwise, they look identical.

8. Looks like the ones my church got...
except ours are the five burner model. Got two of them.

They were there when I started going there four years ago and are great-- no trouble at all and everyone loves cooking and baking with them. They're easy to keep clean, too.

15. update
when I started trying to use it, the flames were HUGH!!!1!!!!

seems the salesman forgot to tell me that I needed a kit to run it on propane :banghead:

all is well now, finally.....

sigh

but the convection worked great for my NYT/An5 bread crusts. I turned it on after I removed the lid of the dutch oven and it browned it up beautifully without making the crust thick and hard

I'm liking it!!
