No aigs yet. But turkeys!
Well, here I am on a farm-ette for the near future.

Turns out there are no chickens yet. But there are two dozen young turkeys. Ha!

Here is what I observed on my first walk about the gardens. (Planning menus in the back of my mind as I tasted and pinched.)

Six fig trees heavily laden not ripe.

Multiple peach, apple, plum trees.

A good 100 feet of beautiful espaliered pears and apples

A circle of espaliered pear trees with a decorative maypole in the middle. I kid you not. Probably 30 feet in diameter.

Row after row of berries. Loganberries, boysenberries, raspberries, black raspberries (blackcaps). Some finished bearing for the season, but there will be a second raspberry crop. Each row is probably 60 feet long.

Row after row of grapes, all unripe.

Many currant bushes of various kinds. Dark, and bright red, and a transparent pearly beautiful color.

Many blueberry bushes.

Elderberries.

Rhubarb. yay!

Huge asparagus bed (done)

Dozens of artichoke plants (done)

Enormous beds of various squashes, gourds, pumpkins, basil, peppers, tomatoes, eggplants, beets, potatoes, chard, that funny broccoli with pointy crowns

Rows of carrots, bush beans, and a dozen other things.

Two huge corn patches, in staggered planting. For the first time I will be able to boil the water and then pick the corn for the pot.

A greenhouse with trees bearing mature limes.

And I am forgetting about half of the wonders! I never saw anything like it.

The only thing I haven't seen is lavender. And there aren't really any herbs aside from rosemary. But I can do that in pots.

The little apartment is over the garage. It's a step below what one might call shabby chic. I think the building might have been the original farmhouse, built in 1915. It doesn't smell very good. But it has a wraparound deck facing the garden. Good for watching the sun rise and great for the ice cream maker and little BBQ. I have a clothes rack for drying things, my canning kettle and one batch of jars. I had to abandon some things such as the dehydrator and more jars, sadly. And I have to put a LOT of stuff in storage for the duration. But my cookbooks, my vintage kitchenaid and utensils, etc. are here. The kitchen is tiny. It's going to be interesting.

I will live here with my adult niece, who has lived with me for many years. She has a learning disability and is dependent on me. We have two cats and the rescued border collie. We have internet access so I can work eBay.

We are sad, excited, and exhausted. But we have blueberries at will! Pie tomorrow!

2. Wow....
It sounds like you have found a nest that you will enjoy for a while! I've never eaten a Turkey egg but I can't imagine it would be that different than a chicken's. Let us know! What a bountiful garden. I feel shame for neglecting my acres and not taking full advantage. If I could only get the SO to embrace the dirt and help me out I could grow an amazing amount as well. Alas he's a city boy and my body won't allow me to do more than water and harvest my one raised bed.

Oh and you have figs...so it must be almost heaven.

3. Oh!
Sounds fabulous! You've fallen right into heaven! I'm so glad that if you had to lose your home that you are now surrounded by all these wonders you've described. So glad you have someone who could offer you such a lovely place to live.

I hope you and your niece come to love it there, sweetie.

8. HW, I saw some funny things tonight in the garden.
Maybe you know what they are. I was thinking they were what we used to call a spider puffball only much bigger. About baseball sized, and very light, and light colored. An insect egg case? I saw several, under some trees.

10. the first two pics do resemble what I saw...
...but they were bigger than I would expect. The size of an orange. I'll find out tomorrow, perhaps.

11. Puffballs can be any size from tiny to huge
We get ones about grapefruit size, but when I googled for the picture, I found pics of ones bigger than a person's head!

I just read your other post about being kicked out - it sure looks like you found a great place to land! Good luck.

5. I told her we would pretend that it's the thirties....
....that we lost our home, found a little shabby place, will live off the garden, use all vintage things....oh, wait! I've seen this movie. Maybe with Henry Fonda in it?

Luckily, I have an extensive collection of vintage table linens and kitchen things to set the scene. Wooden bowls, pie crimpers, and so on. And I have vintage furniture and lamps. And I have the music of the era on CDs. And a collection of vintage cookbooks and paper items.

My host and his partner are musicians. In their living room are two grand pianos and an organ. I have 12,000 pieces of old sheet music in storage.

Isn't it odd how things work out. Ya can never go wrong buying vintage! (I know you know that.)
