Is it just me, or is Tilipia nasty?

So, we keep hearing about how wonderful Tilipia filets are. I'm good with salt-water fish, but not a fan of much freshwater fish; I hate catfish, for example, and eat trout and bass only under duress. Cat tends to be muddy, and I've yet to find a good trout or bass, either. Plus, I don't trust most inland fish because of the mercury issues. Salt-water fish I find that I limit myself to whatever the World Wildlife Federation says is okay (so, even though I like Mahi and Roughy, those are about fished out and I won't eat them. Same with cod, certain tunas and salmons, certain sharks, Chilean Sea Bass, etc.) We pretty much eat flounder, grouper, safe salmon and tuna, shellfish, and safe shark and swordfish. DH hates fish of all sorts, save catfish in cornmeal deep-fried, so that's not so big a problem.

But we've been hearing that Tilipia is an environmentally sound fish, since it's vegetarian and farm-raised. So we decided to try it. I cooked it carefully, baked in garlic butter, as suggested by the gent at the fish counter at Whole Foods.

Ick. It was like eating mud. It was worse than catfish.

So, did I do something wrong, or is it the fish, and I should just swear off the stuff entirely?

Sparkly eats no meat, so fish and shellfish are our "common ground" protein source. We've eaten talapia and always found it quite palatable. I'm with you completely on your comments about fresh water fish and catfish. But I never had that problem with (fresh water, also) talapia.

I don't know what to tell you. Maybe try it again from another store who buys from different sources? I know that shrimp and clams, for example, can taste wonderfully sweet or horribly muddy depending on where they're from. My experience is that Asian imports of clams in particular taste pretty bad to me. So bad that I no longer buy them, even if they're cheaper than domestic clams. Shrimp is a somewhat different issue. The good stuff tastes wonderful. The "bad" stuff just tastes like nothing. Not bad. Just bland and flat. But the Asian imported clams .... blech!

HATE catfish. Cat is just gross lol. I bake talapia in garlic, pepper, sea salt, and butter covered with sliced tomatoes and grated parmesan. If it gets overcooked, it's pretty bland. I'm thinking you got a bad batch.

I try it about once a year. Different suppliers every time, different times of the year, too. (Yes, I'm such a geek that I have my iCal set up to remind me to try catfish, and a list permanently stored on the hard drive of what we've tried.) No dice.

If I'm ever in Austin, I'll ask you for the name of the place and give it a shot.

I find it flavorless. I love catfish though.
It sounds to me like you probably overcooked yours. When I made it, it was extremely light, definitely not muddy.

Just a nasty batch.

Once I clean all the other fish out of the freezer - I've got halibut and cod for fish tacos out this afternoon, and several other packages waiting - I'll give it another try.
