God Help Me....I'm buying another gadget.
Even though I'm not cooking much I really am feeling a deep need for this.

http://www.qvc.com/qic/qvcapp.aspx/view.2/app.detail/params.item.K7702.cm_scid.shpl/walk.yah.0000

It's the Fuller manual Vegetable curler and slicer. It's getting good reviews and even though I won't be making the curly fries the idea of curly baked zucchini is sounding oddly appealing. My knife skills aren't what they use to be with the Arthritis now in my hands....

I think I really, really need this.

1. Lulz
I was going to scold you because I think you helped talk me out of the NuWave oven thingie, but as this is under $20, I can't. It does look really plastic, though. . . Is there a warranty if that crank suddenly snaps off in the middle of shredding a squash?

My last amazing purchase was an OXO mandoline (on sale at BB&B, plus a $20 coupon, making it still a reprehensible $50). I use that sucker all the time and looooove being able to crank out perfect slices like a fiend, though I have to say it doesn't julienne as well as it might (at least on hard things, like carrots). For that, the best thing is still a $5 julienne peeler.

I will sometimes watch QVC around the holidays to get gift ideas for people like my mom, but have found it too dangerous to make a habit of it. Can't stand those perky salespeople and yet I'm still too susceptible to a good demo (see NuWave, above--and yep, I did resist for good). Come to think of it, BB&B was running a Mario Batali video promo for the mandoline, which made it irresistible, too. . . but I was actually shopping for one at the time so it wasn't an impulse purchase.

3. My mandolin broke about a year ago
I haven't replaced it as I haven't been cooking much but I use to use it all the time. I was going to get a new one but saw this thing on the tube last night and have been longing for it ever since. I'll finally be able to make Onion Curls :wow: But seriously--doesn't that sound good...Mounds of curly onions dusted with some egg white and Wondra and spices baked in the oven until crisp.

I can make curly apple tarts and zucchini puttenesca!

At twenty bucks even if I use it a few times I'll get my moneys worth in pure playtime alone.

Oh and BTW....Buy the Glass Oven....Just make sure you get the extender so you can do a Turkey. I loved Mine until the SO dropped it. If I ever have enough room for it It's high on my list of things I'd like to have (again)

24. Isn't the nuwave made of glass?
When I had one the dome was made of glass so I always called it my glass oven. I bet they've changed it to plastic....I can't even bring myself to google it as I want to replace mine so much. I just don't have the room to justify buying something that large. I have no counter room and with my "medical issues" I can't be hauling that thing in and out of the pantry.

Get the oven.... But only if you have room for it!

31. Yeah. . .
it's now "space-age plastic." That was how I managed to heed the advice of so many here to save my money. In retrospect, I see you did try to entice me before.

If you're still dying to get one, go here and enter FIND100 as a coupon code for another 10% off--total, including free shipping, expander ring, and all: $134.91. Replacement parts ARE available, and not that expensive--a "refurbished" dome is only $15, which I figure would be the first thing to go.

You just scored on the curly cutter deal of all time and deserve a splurge, right? (Crap. My wickedness may have backfired because it's looking like a good deal to me again, too. . .)

5. Why the hell not?!?!
I saw a guy in a diner kitchen using one of these on "DDD" on the Food Network the other evening, and it's a real beauty.

Get it. Looks like it'll be easy on your hands, so that seems to me like a clear sign that you really, really should have it.

Life is short, but appliances are fun.

Twenty bucks.

Do it. And tell everything!!!

(Warning - plastic body, made in China - both negatives for me - but, so what?)

8. I want a Mouli cheese grater
Edited on Tue Aug-18-09 06:04 PM by madmax
but, have so many uni gadgets it drives me nuts. I haven't watched him in a while but, Alton Brown would comment about a gadget that had several uses.

I have a mini Black and Decker chopper. I love that puppy. Use it for garlic, onions, nuts, it's great. Was cheap and have had it about 8 years now.

edited for damn typos

9. I have a lovely plane on which I grate cheese,
and it's also very good with fresh ginger, and, if I'm in the mood, garlic.

Mostly, it's me and my good old $4 Chinese cleaver that I bought in Chinatown thirty years ago when it comes to slicing and chopping. It's easier to clean a knife and a cutting board than a whole bunch of gadgets.

But, like everyone else, I struggle with the burning desire to possess a new kitchen gadget just about every damn day.................

12. The one sold by the ShamWow guy?
That twenty-dollar thing?

Oh, talk about a piece of crap.

I want one, too. :::: sigh :::::

Your hands give you trouble? Mine are responding to the meds wonderfully. I caught a cantaloupe in one hand the other day, without even thinking, when my friend dropped it as he was unloading his cart in the market. That was so shocking to me - so, despite the side effects, it's working.

I'm trying to tell myself I have no need for an immersion blender - I truly do not - but, man, I WANT ONE!

I'm taking the Dex, don't care about side effects right now want to boogie with the Grandbaby!

Get the Imersion Blender - ordered a KitchenAid from Amazon about 50-60 bucks. Great for smoothies, pea soup, gravy. Now that sucker is a multi-tasker. I love it so much more than a blender, sooo ez to clean and very powerful. Go for it, lol.

I'm at the point that I feel oh the hell with it I've scrimped and saved - what the hell am I waiting for.

Yesterday at the mall I bought 4 pcs. of silver jewelry, that I thought Ashley might like. When I wear it when she's here if she comments on it, well you know, it's hers! lol I'm going to spoil the hell out of her. As if...

15. Yes, that's exactly right -
and even if she doesn't comment on it, you've got yourself some goodies.

I've always believed in burning up the bucks. But, try as I might, I don't need an immersion blender - don't drink smoothies, don't eat pea soup, and I so rarely even use the blender. My Cuisinart gets more use than the blender.

You're going to have a great time with the grandkid, and how is the weather forecast looking? Bill is heading North, away from you and even from us, up towards northern New England.

I didn't fix those brownies yet. Too damn hot to be in the kitchen....................

16. It sure is hot
So of course today I had a fit for cooking. Made potato salad, zucchini fritters, again - different recipe, and just popped a banana nut bread into the oven which will be ready at 10:10. A cup a tea and then spend the rest of the night cursing at the tv.

Sheesh, I'm wondering if Hippywife has invaded my body! Next thing you know I'll be canning, freezing, baking bread and plowing the north 40!

Spending - Moi? I'm multi-tasking tonight. Baking, reading DU, watching Rachel and buying clothes online at L.L. Bean. Tis, quite fun and entertaining.

Don't know about the weather, most likely will rain but, the condo has 3 pools - 1 indoor, 4 Jacuzzis 2 indoors, and a lazy river. We'll have fun no matter what. It usually doesn't rain all day, it's like Florida. Rains and then the sun comes out.

Can you smell the bread?

Used the thing until I killed it in the DW (it was all metal). They've been around forever. Now, you can buy them anywhere for about $10, though they have plastic parts. I'm talking the real Mouli, not that ShamWow dude's thing (though I have to admit that cheese grater thingie he has looks appealing 'cos you don't have to clean it out every time. . .)

10. Damn--this has a video, too.
It does look fun, but it bothers me a bit that the best part of the carrot is wasted. I'm thinking I would also prefer to slice the veg lengthwise halfway through before cranking it so I ended up with more manageable-sized pieces--it would hit that line and start a new piece, right? Something about a 3-yard french fry or cucumber slice that sounds unwieldy. Have to admit that this makes me crazy for some carrot slaw or baked tatties--I bet those would brown up insanely well in the convection oven. . . And yes, the squash "pasta" does sound good, too.

I figure let the next one go to work. I did my share, rofl.

Went out today and bought some nice fall clothes, to go with the nice jewelry I bought the other day, and the 3 new pair of shoes, I bought last week. I'm on a binge. I intend to get dressed up nice every day even if it's only to Home Depot to buy nails!

Sales, sales, sales.

As far as buying for the kitchen, it's an investment as you'll be cooking at home versus eating out. That saves a bunch of $.

I don't like being pestered every 5 minutes with, 'is everything ok, can I get you something, yada, yada. I want alone time with the husband - it's the only time I can hold him hostage to my drivel. ;)

Since it's just the 2 of us now, we get by on easy quick fixes. For dinner yesterday we had fresh mozarella, roasted peppers, tomatoes with oil and garlic bread and roasted chicken.

Later I had Banana nut bread and coffee for my late night snack. I made the bread myself. Taaaa daaaa!

I'm nosey and just checked your profile - you live in Bergen County, NJ! Yeah, well I guess you know that ;)

My wealthy bro in law lives in Bergen. They grew up in Teaneck. You live in a very expensive county. My brother in law and his ex- wife (recently divorce) lived in Saddle River. They sold that house and my sis in law bought a house in Airmont, NY and he bought one in .... I'm thinking.... can't remember now, lol. whatever.

We moved to NC 2 years ago from Middlesex County, NJ - near East Brunswick. I love it here so much more than NJ and money goes further for homes, property taxes and the quality of life here is wonderful. I do not miss NJ one iota. I always felt the need to leave.

So here's to you Jersey Girl :toast:

I was all about the Mazur's but I've heard they've gone down hill.

Everytime I'm within 100 miles of New Jersey...I visit the White Castle on Rt 17 and the North Arlington Diner for the Best Cheesecake in the Entire World. (It really is that good---I'm not a huge Cheesecake fan and I swoon)

Best Pizza though is in Jersey City at Three Guys near the Path in Journal Square...Though ya gotta give some love to the Pizzaland on the Pike...just out of Respect.

People out here on the west coast just don't get the Bakery thing. We have terrific baked goods but Nothing like a Jersey Bakery. If ya wanna know what I'm talking about go look at the pictures of what they offer every single day. All fresh! Any day of the week. Fricken amazing!

It's the only decent Italian bread I can find here. I'd be lost without it. I also miss Teixeira's bread. They're Portuguese and make great bread, too. And forget bagels! There are no bakeries to speak of here. I've heard of one in Wake Forrest, I believe the owners are from NY - I think the name is SoHo Bakery. It's about an hour away and haven't been able to drive that far but, I'm on the mend so look out Wake Forrest.

Last year I suffered so during Christmas I NEED salted dried cod fish to make my Christmas Eve dinner and there is nothing here remotely like it. Ewww, what they call salted dried cod is not fit for a cat. Even at Trader Joe's and Whole Paycheck. Also miss chorizo - the Portuguese style. Here they have Mexican chorizo but, it's not the same.

PAGING EMERIL...

Gawd, those are the only things I miss from NJ. Hell, maybe I'll visit my granddaughter in early November and go to 'downneck' Newark or Elizabeth and get 50 lbs. of each.

The best part of that Christmas dish is making bolos de bacala. Codfish cakes with the left over cod and potatos. My husband called my Mom the 'Bacala Queen'. She made them so good. Somebody pass the wine.

Don't tell but for his birthday a few years ago I had a Pizza sent from NJ to Seattle.

http://www.pizzalandpizza.com/

I get shipments of Taylor Ham several times a year and My sister will occasionally send some Rye Bread. I can't get the cheesecake or the White Castles delivered without losing quality....

I've had boxes of Bakery cookies, danish, bagels and bread delivered overnight. It's not as fresh as same day but totally worth the expense when you really NEED TO HAVE it. When I was pregnant I NEEEEEDED Prune Danish and those little butter cookies with the cherries.

I bet you can find your sausage on line....

My brother in law drove us past Nixon's place in Saddle River. I didn't know if I should spit or scream. So I did neither - he's a big Nixon fan and a Republican. Believes that opening trade with China was fantastic. Yeah, right can't buy anything not made in China and toxic to boot.

Thank God, he doesn't vote. I don't know why. My sister in law is such a progressive liberal, I'm surprised they lasted 25 years!
