How do you lose a jalapeno pepper?
My husband was grilling a bunch of vegetables last night and decided to add just a little jalapeno for some flavor. He thought he could keep track of where the pepper pieces were in the grill pan. Then he said he lost them. :o

Now, I love spicy as much as the next person but all I could get down was the eggplant which didn't seem to take on as much heat as the other veggies.

Is there any way to salvage them now? They are pretty well grilled and slightly mushy...but they look so beautiful...sniff sniff.

1. You can reduce the bite with acid (lemon juice?)
and by serving them with a starch, like rice or pasta.

Or you can enjoy the sweat cooling you off in the dog days of August.

Jalapenos are not that hot. I'm guessing either he used canned ones or he forgot to remove the seeds and veins.

4. I tried that last night, too.
Pad Thai is supposed to be served with lime wedges but no! So he brought me lemon wedges and I used all of them. Did absolutely not one bit of good cutting the heat of those chilis.

8. Personally, I don't think acid works worth a damn, either
but carbohydrates and dairy both work really well. If I overshoot the heat on one of my pots of veggie chili or posole, I just plop on some sour cream and it tames right down. Serving it over rice also helps.

Some folks here have suggested increasing acid as a way to tone it down, so I threw it out there just for giggles.

5. They were fresh. But now I'm eyeballing the cayennes on the window sill...
I doubt he removed the seeds and veins, but I didn't see anything either.

The rice sounds like a good idea.

2. Yogurt or cheese reduce the heat
Milk chocolate works also.

6. He was crazy with herbs on the other stuff, too...
I'm glad he likes to experiment but sometimes he just throws stuff together without thinking about the flavors. :yoiks:

I've had jalapenos raw and thrown on some nachos but this was ridiculous. I guess peppers can vary at times.

7. Or as someone else mentioned
he didn't clean out the seeds and veins. Jalapenos can be very mild when they are cleaned properly.

9. Update: I used some of the peppers in a pasta dish and the rest
even the eggplant, chopped up in a rice dish. It was really good!

And, yes, he used the seeds and all AND it was chopped very fine. I have no idea why he thought this would not affect the other veggies.

But all's well that ends well. :)
