anyone like boiled peanuts?
I love them. I guess it's a southern thing. I'd be interested in hearing if anyone in other parts of the country ever eat them.

I only cook up a batch a few times a year, because, if there are done right, they're ungodly in sodium content.

You can use any kind of raw peanuts, but green ones are best because they won't take so long to get tender.

It's real easy. Ingredients: peanuts, water, salt. I'm not sure of the amounts. Just put enough salt in the water to make it taste more or less like seawater... pretty salty. And boil away until the peanuts get as soft as you like them. I like them pretty soft. After cooking them, I let them sit overnight to soak up the saltwater.

Oh yeah, you can put in some cayenne pepper or jalapenos or habaneros if you like the hot stuff. I generally like hot food, but not for my "boiled goobers."

Very simple, but tasty.

1. I love them!
I haven't made them lately, but when we lived in South Carolina we would make them often. Also, stop at little roadside stands and buy them.

4. there's a truckstop that has them here
But they're not especially to my liking. I still buy them though, and take them home and re-boil them, adding salt to the water. The way they sell them, they are too "crunchy" and not salty enough. I just "doctor them up" a bit. I like them soft and salty.

2. my husband loves them
but it's one of the few foods that I don't like. He's from the Florida panhandle and grew up eating them. I love peanuts, raw and in peanut butter, but just never could get used to the idea of boiling them.

5. Florida panhandle is produce heaven
I remember going down to Pensacola and Panama City with my parents when I was a kid. One little community in particular, Cottondale, Florida. At just about every little house there they would be selling all kinds of melons and tomatoes and peppers and all kinds of stuff. What was especially cool was that most of the places were on the "honor system" where you would take the produce and leave your money in the bucket. I wonder if they still do it like that?

3. One of the most addictive substances known to Man.
We used to buy sacks full from an old gentleman on the side of the road near Gainesville. 55 gallon drum over a fat lighter fire, full to the brim. I can't even find raw goobers now.

Woof

He really wasn't my uncle, more like a distant cousin. But he cooked them like that. He was a nice fellow.

10. that sounds interesting

I'll look for it. Thanks!

EDIT: Found the recipe. This sounds good. But I think they may be a little optimistic on the cooking time for the peanuts.

EDIT EDIT: Oh that's for shelled peanuts. Maybe it's okay to boil them shelled afterall. Never tried that.

1 lb raw peanuts in shell, shelled (1 3/4 cups)
1 Turkish or 1/2 California bay leaf
2 medium tomatoes, seeded and chopped
1 cup chopped fresh cilantro (from 2 bunches)
2 fresh small green Thai or serrano chiles (about 2 inches long), minced
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
3/4 teaspoon fine sea salt

To skin peanuts, blanch in a 3-quart saucepan of boiling salted water 1 minute, then drain well. Slip off and discard skins using your fingers and transfer peanuts to a bowl.

Bring 5 cups water to a boil with bay leaf in same saucepan. Add peanuts and reduce heat to moderate, then simmer, covered, until peanuts are soft enough to crumble easily when pressed with tines of a fork, about 30 to 45 minutes. (Test 1 or 2 peanuts, leaving the rest intact.) Drain well.

When peanuts are almost finished cooking, stir together tomatoes, cilantro, chiles, lemon juice, and sea salt in a bowl. Add drained peanuts and stir to combine.

8. I haven't tried any, but now I'm curious.
My dad used to plant enough rows of peanuts to equal 2 tall stacks.

I'm partial to raw peanuts, with parched coming in second,
but I'll have to try boiled now, since you made them sound so good. :)

11. hope you like them

This is probably obvious, but just in case, I'm talking about peanuts in the shell. I don't know what would happen if you boiled shelled ones. ;)

And if they aren't green, it can take hours and hours to get them soft. I'll usually boil them for and hour and then let them sit covered for a while. Then add more water if needed. Rinse and repeat! Or use the crockpot... that's a good way too.

9. There's an old farmer from Maryland's Eastern Shore who comes to
a weekly flea market over here in cityland and sells really great fresh produce. He comes in this beat to shit old truck and trailer and wears coveralls and has a two day growth of beard. But its all an act. He owns all the land south of Delaware and worth a bazillion bux.

He now has a new trick. He has this home built peanut roaster (that looks as good as his truck does). He makes several flavors peanuts and soybeans. He also has boiled peanuts.

MmmmmmMM!

Sparkly'd make a cute daughter. I think I may be too tough and ugly. I may also be older than he is.

But what the hell ... s'worth a try.
