I didn't know that Jeff Smith died last year
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/living/2001976403_smith10.html

I know he was controversial. But I like some of his recipes and use them often. I hesitated to post this but it surprised me when I ran across this Seattle Times article just now.

1. I enjoyed Jeff's shows and books
I still use his Christmas/Winter Holiday Cookbook every year. I believe I heard he was cleared of the charges against him but I don't think he was able to recover from that.

2. I heard he was being encouraged to return to tv
But he declined. I like his Immigrant cookbook and his first one. I guess that I got to thinking about him because of the potato, garlic and olive oil thread that Husb2 started. Jeff's potato stuffed chicken recipe is so fabulous. I'll post it next time I fix it. It's heavenly. I always liked how he encouraged people to just "try it!" when he was making something off beat.

3. I still have his "Three Great Cuisines" cookbook
I'm not sure that's the exact title. It was Chinese, Italian ... and, as I type this, cannot for the life of me remember the third one. (Getting old SUCKS!!!!)

I loved his shows and never got upset at all the extraneous bullshit. We are all, after all, frail and weak and human.

I'm not sure though....I'm in those "forgetful" years myself.

I have that one too--It's still in a box in my garage-Unpacked from my move of 5 years ago.

5. Yes, good ol' Jeff is gone.

He was one of the first people I met in WA state when I moved out here. He and his wife were very nice people. He was active at I attended, and even gave a few sermons. He also operated a kitchen store in Tacoma I used to visit for toys.

6. It's so nice to see him still talked about with affection...
I was saddened a few years ago when those charges first made the news, and, like eleny, thought he'd been cleared of them (but that kind of thing never makes headlines, does it?).

He made cooking fun and ACCESSIBLE for so many--that's a real gift he gave us, you know.

I still have several of his books. His yorkshire pudding recipe in his Christmas book is excellent. I miss his shows (AND I had a crush on his chef, Craig)--and I miss him.

Showing people that cooking is something fun is a great thing--and I remember him fondly for that.

7. I miss him....
This may sound strange coming from an atheist, but he restored my faith in people of faith. He was never pushy about his faith, and shared it without rancor or insistence. He believed in a god that loved humanity, and reading some of his books have helped me when I've had too much of the Focus on types.

I hope, that if his soul continues, that he has found peace, joy, garlic and good wine in the kitchen, and the wonders of the world right outside his eternal door.

8. I loved his show... It was so calm-inducing
I know nothing factually about the charges. But I would watch his show at noon on Saturdays and it was so cool. It's hard to explain, except that I loved it. Except once, he had a show about "disgusting food" or something, that's probably not what he called it. But it was disgusting. Including a head of some sort, can't remember if it was a goat or a sheep, but it was a head. I almost threw up... don't know why he did that one... kind of ruined the show for me.
