Question about Infant 'Talking'
Edited on Mon Jan-24-05 03:23 PM by Ravenseye
Our daughter is now 3 months and a bit old. The past few days she's started 'talking'. What I mean is she just lays there on the ground making sounds that sort of sound like crying mixed with the martians from 'Mars Attacks' and a cat coughing up a hairball. She's got wide eyes and does it in response to when we talk to her. Then she'll start 'talking' and just go for minutes at a time.

I keep getting concerend when she does it till I notice that her eyes are wide and bright, and she does it smiling.

Is this a normal developmental thing? Does it mean she's going to be a talker? What's up with this?

2. I'm a speech-language pathologist
As long as she's not having trouble breathing, she's doing what she's supposed to be doing :) If she's truly coughing, give the doctor's office a call to make sure she's not aspirating. If she's really just making sounds, that's great.

Babies are born with the ability to make the sounds that occur in every language. The ones that "stick" are the ones that we use in our language.

4. Ok
Yeah she's not coughing or anything. Just making noises. This morning she woke us up. She wasn't crying. She was laying in her crib talking to her mobile. It's not 100% distinct from the sounds she makes crying, but you can tell the difference very easily either by looking at her or just listening for a bit.

When do babies first start turning those sounds into words generally?

9. While it can vary greatly,
most babies produce a "real" word between 10-12 months.

I have a nice development chart that I created for my practice. If you'd like a copy (it's a Microsoft Word document) PM me and I'll e-mail it.

7. Thanks
It took awhile for us to actually say thank you when people told us she was cute. We'd just respond 'We know.' heh.

6. Your baby is so adorable!
I love the little sounds that they make when they're small! I remember telling my godmother that I couldn't wait for my first one to talk and she told me to bite my tongue; that once she'd start talking she wouldn't stop so to enjoy the noises while I could :P.

8. Thanks
She's all about the little sounds right now. I'm now nervous about her talking. She's probably going to be a little motor mouth.
