Xgl and Compiz with KDE?
Is it possible to use Compiz and Xgl with KDE as the window manager in Fedora Core 5? I downloaded a KDE Improvement from the KDE dot org website which make the kicker pager work with compiz, but it doesn't appear to actually do anything.

I followed the ./configure, make, make install process to the letter, and the applet is available to add to the taskbar, but it doesn't seem to do jack. It certainly doesn't enable compiz as it is in Gnome.

I really like KDE. Can it be used with Compiz?

1. Yes ...

I am not familiar with Fedora Core 5 and so don't know how well this would translate, but perhaps you could get something out of the instructions for setting this up with SuSE.

http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/17174.html

Some of that is outdated, and more than a bit of it is overkill if you already have 3d accelleration working and such. It also has a lot of stuff in it that reflects using SuSE's graphical tools for installation of various packages.

However, the keys to making it work are configuring your xorg.conf file, what your system uses as a displaymanager, etc. In any case, maybe it'll be a start.

2. I just installed Mandriva 2007 x86_64 here...
And it installs Compiz/XGL(or AIGLX, depending) automagically. It also installs KDE 3.5.3 and it all works together, quickly(very quickly) and the response is incredibly fast, surprisingly.

It's also real eye candy.
