I see a couple o' folks here have used Scribus

I just stumbled across it, and I could really use some good DTP software, but I ain't about to fork out $899 for Quark, which is what I used when I was a newspaper editor.

I'd greatly appreciate a few experienced words about Scribus, particularly how it stacks up against Quark and InDesign in terms of capabilities, learning curve, etc. (I've already discovered that it has good support.) I'd use it to design and lay out newsletters and whatnot.

"whatnot" with WordPerfect. Yeah, I know-- that won't give you bleed pages, separations, and all of the fineries of a real DTP package, but it made some damn fine flyers, newsletters, and whatevers. It also has a good PDF creator, not hacked but actually licensed from Adobe, that made up for much of its lack of printing press friendliness.

Other than that, download Scribus and give it a shot. It looks worthwhile, so I'm planning on giving it a closer look.

2. I've used it for years, works fine for me. Can't say how it stacks up

against Windows and Mac DTP programs, because I haven't used them extensively. Most of my experience is with Tex, Lyx, and whatnot - plus Calamus and PageStream on Atari and Amiga platforms.
