1. Thanks. I downloaded this and may play with it in virtualbox

2. The iso seems to boot fine in virtualbox. The instructions for making a bootable thumbdrive
are either incorrect or don't match the versions of programs for the OS I was using. And although the unetbootin page indicates unetbootin has been used successfully to prepare thumbdrive versions of this software, the thumbdrives I produced did not work in virtualbox (using the helper iso-CD method I recently posted in this forum) nor do they work on a standalone ubuntu netbook. I'll retry this later in a different way

3. I next tried making a thumbdrive by booting the iso for the live cd. This proceeded correctly
until the final step: sysresccd-usbstick syslinux /dev/sdb1 gave "Error converting to codepage 850"

4. OK. The problem seems to have been missing functionality in virtualbox:
unetbootin on a real linux machine constructs a working thumbdrive from the live cd iso without difficulty

The problem with the "iso-CD helper" in virtual box is probably a second unrelated problem, based on assuming too much functionality for the helper cd. Eventually, I'll try to set up a VMDK file in VB pointing to a flash and see if that will work instead

5. Good to know
I don't have a need for booting from a thumb drive right now but I probably will if I get a netbook.

6. There's another way to boot from a flashdrive in VB described in Chap 9 of the manual:
Edited on Mon Jan-04-10 09:00 PM by struggle4progress
it is to set up a vmdk file that treats the usb as a harddisk; in OSX the command has the form, where diskN is the number of the usb flash

VBoxManage internalcommands createrawvmdk -filename <path to vmdkfile>vmdkfile.vmdk -rawdisk /dev/diskN -register

Then set up the machine to boot from the vmdk. I tried this successfully with a mint stick, an ubuntu stick, and a systemrescuecd stick

<edit:> Forgot to add that my usb sticks had to be unmounted (but not ejected) before starting VB; otherwise VB couldn't access them
