DIE SCO DIE!!! DIE in a FIRE!!!
Anyway ... This legal battle involving SCO and its attempted claims to copyrights and patents that would give it ownership of Linux has gone on FOREVER. Mountains and mountains of legal documents have been generated, and the good folks at Groklaw have done their best to keep us all informed. But, really ... since the main ruling, oh, what seems like a century ago, it's just plain confusing and boring.

But, finally, Christopher B. Wright of Ubersoft.net Help Desk has distilled it all down to its simplest essence (and released it under a Creative Commons 3.0 license).

1. They're still at it?
Still?! Geesh, I thought the Novell verdict finally killed them. What's it going to take, napalm and bullets?

2. time for them to give it up

SCO Group wants a judge to overrule a jury that found it doesn’t own Unix. Or it wants a fresh trial. Either, really, as long as SCO gets the result it wants.

<...>

Sadly, it was SCO that had pleaded with US justices for a jury to hear its case after a summary judgment by Judge Kimball and a bench trial - also held by Kimball - both went against SCO and found the company does not own the copyright on Unix.

Now, SCO wants to revert back to having a judge rule on the case, or conduct a fresh trial - whatever, SCO's really not bothered. It's just that those dumbasses on the jury "simply got it wrong" and the verdict "cannot be reconciled with the "overwhelming evidence" it presented. Apparently.

4. Nuke 'em from space ...

... only way, etc.

I admit to not having paid enough attention lately to know ... WHERE are these guys getting the money to pay the lawyers?

5. MS
Microsoft may be irrelevant in mobile phone operating systems, but I see them continuing to try to win a far larger battle: convincing corporate buyers that Linux is plagued with IP (intellectual property) problems and that they need to pay off Microsoft to use it safely. It's a battle they've been fighting for a long time now, starting with its support for SCO and its ridiculous Linux copyright lawsuits. They're no longer trying to fight directly, thus, they're not taking on Google, but by pushing companies that use Linux.

6. Aha ...

Well, then, now that makes perfect sense.

I feel dumb for not having thought of it.
