1. Mint homepage blog hasn't been updated yet
http://www.linuxmint.com/index.php

Are you sure that this is the official release? I suspect it may still be some version of Isadora release candidate from two weeks ago

You could be right: the md5 checksums don't match the RC versions on the mint website, but the mint site still says

... Our latest release is Linux Mint 8, codename "Helena" ...

4. What makes it inferior?

I haven't had the time lately to sit down and try out the newness, so I'm running behind. I still have a 10.04 RC on my test partition, I think.

I'm currently using Mint 8 - CE (KDE), and I've run into quite a few small but very annoying bugs in the 64bit version. (Until building a new machine recently, I had stayed with 32bit most of the time.) The desktop manage just flat died yesterday, the kind of died that requires a hard rest. I have rarely had that happen in any Linux distribution.

Anyway, just curious.

5. I guess it starts at the color
and just keeps on going down hill from there. Slow to boot, I'm used to ubuntu 10.04's 12 second or so boot time and I though they would pretty much be the same in that respect but they sure aren't. Web surfing is faster too with 10.04, why I have no idea. I have them both on this same hard drive so its not the machines fault. Mint 9 dvd installs with vlc and gimp both though but thats really not a big deal as I remove a bunch of bloat and add some more anyway. Mint doesn't have the fonts I like either and I don't yet know how to install fonts. I'm a sawasdee font man myself. Its seems to be the sharpest, crispest font of them all to me on this flat screen.

I haven't been able to get Autocad 2000 to work with either version where it works great in ubuntu 9.10 and mint 8. Wine keeps telling me that they can't verify the exe file so they won't let it install. I'm sure theres a work around and sooner or later I'll find it, hopefully. I've had to put xp back on here temporally :grr: so I can have autocad and I sure want to get rid of xp for good.

When I boot to my mint9 partition theres a splash screen that comes up telling me I have the final release of mint9 too, btw.

8. Well that sucks ...

I'm sorry to hear about the Autocad problem. I was so happy for you that you'd managed to get it to work previously. I can't imagine what might be causing that, other than Wine having been updated lately in some significant ways. Looks like the "updates" broke something.

As for Mint, I can report this. The 64bit version is broken. It's probably something specific to my system (since I can find no reports of this yet) and likely has to do with the bootloader (grub2), but I got a kernel panic just attempting to verify the integrity of the CD, never mind installing it. So, I can't say anything about it other than that. I haven't even seen the desktop yet.

I'm downloading the 32 bit version now for testing.

10. I get a 10 sec boot for Isadora in virtual box, which seems to be about
half the boot time for mint8

7. Just started the download
I like to keep the Mint ISO on my flash drive because it makes for a great 'LiveCD' demo as it comes with the restricted extras stuff that requires an download in Ubuntu. Plus it's pretty:
