if you want to search for ancestors that might have served in the civil war, and also gives some history of the various outfits.

Reading a set of Time-Life books on the civil war sparked my interest in genealogy. It's all history, right? : )

3. There's a book ...

That site was started years ago, like mid-90's IIRC. At first it was sort of a staging area for the research into a comparative review of people's lives during the Civil War in two similar locations, separated by North and South. It became more and more refined until it is what you see today.

The developers eventually published a book based on all that research, which is, again IIRC, named similarly.

You're right. It's an amazing site.
