Monitor problem
I think it's the monitor anyway. I leave the desktop on and when I come in to move the mouse to start in the am the monitor won't wake up. If I turn it off and on again I get the 'in power save mode, move mouse or press any key' but nothing happens, just a black screen. The other day this happened and I just hit the button and restarted the computer and everything was ok but there are windows open and that isn't too good to do is it? It's a flat lcd monitor. I found something that looked disconnected and just plugged it in but it still won't come on. All the cables look ok and the light on the monitor is yellow.

1. Guessing here ...
Probably not the monitor. Probably a matter of BIOS settings and
Windoze settings getting in the way of each other and/or buggy drivers.

Start by turning the power management crap off in the BIOS and also
the Control Panel (I'm assuming this is a Windoze box) and see if
it goes away. Check the Video card "Settings" too (Right click on the
desktop and turn all that screen blank and power management crap off.)

YMMV.

2. Ok I'll try that
I gave in and tried to shut it down and it wouldn't shut off even when I held that button in. I shut it down by shutting off the ups and then turned it all on again and it just started up like nothing happened. The desktop was a bit rearranged but everything else seems normal. Something about adjusting video flashed when I turned it back on. This happens every once in a while then everything is ok for months but this is the first time it happened close together. The set up is two years old.

3. You might want to look into how much unwanted crap is running too.
All those little programs that install themselves and meddle with your
machine and never get removed like dust-bunnies under the bed.

4. I did that a couple of months ago
That damned windows messenger won't go away. I never use it and it comes back and has me signed in.

6. I dunno about that one.
I run Win98 when I run Windoze, so I am reluctant to give specific
directions 'cause I am not up-to-date. Maybe someone else can
comment?

5. Right now all is fine
See if it happens again tomorrow or some other time. I turned all the stuff off (I think).
