Is my laptop overheating or does it need a new motherboard?
Few the past few days when I've had it on my more than a half hour, it has shut down without warning (even when plugged in) but the fans were running until I totally unplugged it, it wouldn't turn back on but it was able to boot into Windows after I waited about an hour and it would do it again after having been on for about a half hour. I blow out the fans and ports with canned (compressed) air, I hope I solved the problem. Nothing is blocking the fans or ports.

Are these the typical symptoms of an overheated laptop?

1. Sure sounds like it.
What brand is it? I know that some Toshibas were particularly prone to overheating--such as mine. I had to basically tear it down to clean out the exhaust port, which was pretty badly clogged.

2. Yep....I agree with Hand.....It MIGHT last longer if you can stand turning down...
...your screen brightness....but that won't solve the problem only prolong the inevitable

3. Another use for chopsticks or #2 pencils, or this tech solution to get air flow under the
laptop to get rid of heat buildup.

My laptop also has an overheating problem. I've curtailed it (though not completely stopped it) by getting one of those "breakfast in bed" trays and putting my laptop on it. Only having the thin particle board under the computer with airflow under that has really cut down the overheating problem. Weird, but it's been working for me!

Mine looks like this

but a Google image search brought this one up, which might even be better because of the slats.
