When I connected the IDE cables, I got one of the CD drives that was jumpered as Master on the same damn channel as the HD instead of the other (DVD) that was supposed to be the slave. Gawd, I am an idiot.

1. I had a hard drive and DVD drive that just would not get along
on the same cable. Both were OK if not on the same cable.
Eventually I decided the DVD was broke, it was a cheap one,
it never really worked "right", it was slow and "sticky", but
I used it for four years or so with some success. But if I
put it on the same cable as this IBM hard drive, it would not
show up in the POST list. Made no difference how the jumpers
were set.

It is not uncommon for a badly oriented floppy cable to cause
the POST to fail, you never even get to the BIOS display.

It pays to be anal about cables.
