Poll question: Assuming you had money, which scenario would you do?
Keep in mind you already own a top of the line Windows PC...

You're in the graphic design field...

A))
Purchase a high end dual quad core Mac Pro and ditch the PC; put Windows on it for boot camp or virtualbox

B))
Buy a Mac Mini, keep the high end PC for development, use the Mac for testing web pages/et al only.

C))
¿Other?

Thx!

1. Dunno. Depends on what you plan to do with a new machine. The quad-core chips
have a slower bus than the dual-cores, last I looked, so for some purposes a dual-core may run faster than a quad- or dual-quad-core

The current Mini doesn't look like a bad machine itself: you can now get a Mini with 4 GB of RAM, so the Mini might be better than the old G5s

You can easily add a lot of RAM to the Pro: it'll take something like 32GB, and a lot of apps seem to confine themselves to one core, so if you're a multi-tasker the Pro is a nice machine. It's easy to add memory or drives to it, though if you jam it full of memory and drives, it may run a bit hot

4. Mine (Q9650) has a native bus of 333MHz; o/c'ed it to 400MHz without overvolting...
To do 450MHz, I'd have to overvolt to 1.355v and coming close to the 1.36v maximum. Since that's a net yield of 400MHz, that's not worth frying the chip over. 3.6GHz is fine and dandy for me... :D

I'll likely go for a Mini and swap out as many components as I can... or just leave it as it is and be happy; test from there. :D

5. I hope you'll post your experiences if you decide to replace Mini components: my searches
suggest the box can be a bit tricky to open and that certain screws may not be trivial to remove/replace -- so some of us will appreciate knowing what luck others have with it

6. It figures...

I need to finish up on a couple purchases first; by July or August I'll probably be buying... (I know what I said in that lounge argument; life is about business... still debating on getting the higher end Pro or the lower end Mini... by summer's end, new models might come out anyway...)

8. I'd be surprised if they released new models this summer: I think they remodelled the MacPro
within the last six months and the Mini within the last month or so

2. Other
I need the home machine to be practically a clone of the office machine which is a PC, although we have talked about going Mac. Makes not much difference to me which machine I use P'shop, Illustrator or InDesign on.

Now, if money was no object, this is what I'd be getting.... http://www.wacom-asia.com/cintiq/

9. I recently bought a Wacom tablet -- clearance @ Best Buy... 6x11"
$220. Retail (even on Wacom's site) is $369. :woohoo:

Aye, the Adobe apps work just fine on both platforms and speedy too. I'll probably still get a Mini, but either way it's months down the road... :D

10. I've had a Graphire tablet for years
but never really got used to using it as a first choice. Too much of a disconnect between using your pen on the tablet and the screen results. Didn't like the position of the button for clicking either. Those Cintiqs start at a couple of thousand dollars and I drool every time I see them.
