Do those cheap web hosts typically include python support?
Edited on Mon May-11-09 04:37 AM by Syrinx
I've never had a personal website before. I've worked on them a little bit, but never dealt with these types of companies.

Nothing is imminent, but I just started toying with an idea for a website. I don't necessarily want to learn php. And I do kind of know python, even if I use it more like C++ sometimes.

Do the cheap hosts generally support Python?

There are tons of these web hosts out there. Anyone care to recommend one?

And not that is going to be a problem for me, but I've wondered, what's the greatest performance you should expect from six dollars a month, in terms of bandwidth?

Thanks!

1. Define cheap....
I do have a recommendation: site5.com - I have a reseller account with them but they do individual accounts too: you get the cheapest deal if you pay upfront. They do python. Their special is "unlimited" disk space, "unlimited" bandwidth for $7.95/mo if paid as a 3 year upfront sum. A year upfront is still $9.95/mo. They will do month-to-month for $10.95/mo. If you do go with them I'd appreciate going through the referral link: http://www.site5.com/in.php?id=7119 but that's up to you.

I've been with these guys now for about 3 years. They recently moved my account to a new faster machine with more bandwidth and they handled the process very smoothly indeed: me and my friends who I look after their hosting needs didn't miss a beat.

Mark.

2. I use Bluehost ...

I don't have heavy demands. It's personal space. I have a blog on it that I do mostly nothing with. It's just there so I can play with the internals of WordPress and themes. I use the space for a lot of random things that you just have to have server space to do, and I got tired of messing with keeping my own LAMP server secure. Actually I just got tired of the paranoia of trying to keep it secure.

Anyway, they have python support.

A friend uses it also for a heavily trafficked Civil War site.

I think I paid 5.95/mo for 2 years. I could have paid $4.95/mo for three, but didn't want to lay out that much at the time. I had a "coupon" for it. I think it's regularly 6.95/mo for three years but not sure and am too lazy to check at the moment. You can find coupons if you do a little googling for it. If/When you decide to purchase, let me know, and I'll look around at where I found the one I used if I can find it again.

It's got the "unlimited" bandwidth/storage thing that's become pretty standard. The fine print is that if you're on a shared IP, and if you're using significantly more CPU time than others on that IP, they reserve the right to "suggest" you upgrade to a dedicated IP. That's pretty much how all the "unlimited" hosts work.

You do have to jump through a couple hoops to get shell access, i.e. FAX/Mail a photo ID to them and wait to be approved.

Other than that, I can't say much except to stay the hell away from GoDaddy.
