Computer fried. How to get data off Hard Drive?
I was told that this was THE place to ask this question.

Problem: Computer died. I changed power supply but didn't fix problem. I've been told that it over-heated and was cooked. It's just now a big paper weight sitting in the basement.

I would like to get some stuff off the hard drive.

Question 1: Am I wrong to assume that the Hard Drive is still okay?

Question 2: If I remove the hard drive is there a way to connect it to my existing computer? I've been told if I do this it will try to load the OS and various drivers that I don't want.

Any help or pointing me to somewhere on the web would be GREATLY appreciated.
:dunce:

1. if it's just a power supply
get a new power supply........your drive will be intact and the drive will boot as it normally does.

2. Take the drive
out and jumper it as a slave drive as on the diagram on the drive. Make sure power is off on other computer, take the drive cable and connect the empty connector to the drive, connect the power plug and turn on computer. If the drive is working, the system should see it. the just go to my computer (I assume you're using windows) and click on the new drive letter. You should be able to read and xfer data if the drive works at all. If you have problems find someone who is more of a geek to help you.

5. On a computer that is working,
open the case and disconnect the ribbon cable and power from the CD ROM and attach them to the old drive.
Boot the computer. If the BIOS objects, tell it what it what it want to hear. The second drive will usually be drive D. You can then copy and past from it to the Boot drive.

It will not boot from the old drive.
