laptop fan - getting hot - no sure the fan working - how do you change it
I have had the laptop for years - it is hot on the right side - I run it plugged in - I took the battery out thinking maybe it was getting hot - but it is the area forward (toward back) of the battery that is getting hot

my assumption is the fan - I don't hear it cut on and off like I used to

1. First things first and that would be to make sure the air vents and the fan blades are clean
Chances are it needs a good blowing out with some canned air. Anyways that's a good place to start

3. If it's easy to somewhat disassemble it, go ahead
but just shooting the air into any vent you see is good, too. As long as you can see the dust exiting somewhere, else it's just moving to another place.

It's fairly easy to replace the fan, if that's what it is (of course, depends on model; some easier than others)

4. is there a tutorial somewhere on taking apart a laptop
If I shoot the air in without taking it apart, that is the only vents so it would be just moving it around - once I have it apart, how would I know if it is the fan or not - can't run it while it is in pieces

5. They are out there, you just need to get past the spam pages
I'd start here

http://www.irisvista.com/tech/

and see if you can find your model. Then look it over several times before even thinking about beginning to try it yourself, if you've never taken a computer (and especially a laptop) apart. Once you're comfortable with it, it's really not a big deal, but make sure to familiarize yourself first by looking at tutorials with good images.

You could also search within sites like Instructables.

6. I went out to get air can - expensive - tried blowing on the laptop
and shook it a little and banged it a little on that end - the fan is working again - thought I had another problem because I could not connect to Internet - but after about an hour - it came back up and must have been down - I showed connectivity but no getting there. Try FTP and still couldn't - right now I am running - but it might be time to get this one worked on and that means I need another one to work with.
