XP taskbar won't save settings
Every since I got my computer back with the new hard drive, the taskbar won't hold the settings for icons I want hidden and shown.

Any suggestions?

1. When I had that issue ..
the only thing I could find to fix it is MS's One Care Live (free). Allow 3-5 hours for scan.

5. Right click the taskbar and choose properties where you can customize or expand the toolbar
on the menu and select quick launch or I like to use desktop.

8. I had exactly the same issue.
Do you use AVG by any chance? What do you mean it won't install? Error message? Stalls? It runs online, and only downloads a few files.

10. I use McAfee for virus protection.
It says it's not compatible and won't install.

9. You may need to unlock the taskbar, make changes and reboot for changes to update in the
registery and then relock the toolbar.

13. It is definitely a registry bug.
Edited on Tue Nov-03-09 04:12 PM by Why Syzygy
You can either turn off McAfee, see if they have a registry fix or find another solution that will deal with the registry, Lord McAfee willing.

This is crazy. It's such a little thing but it annoys me. B-)

It's the Notification area I'm having trouble with and I don't know where that is in the registry.

17. What is the "notification area"?
Edited on Tue Nov-03-09 06:37 PM by Why Syzygy
Do you mean the programs it displays in the systray? That's where my problem was. No matter how many times I marked "always hide", it would not hold. I even lost the ability to hide icons ( < ) .

18. Yes, that area.
I lost the volume and the local area connection icons....they just won't show up no matter what I do.

I've tried all the "fixes" I've found on the Internet. None of them have worked so far.

19. Have you checked the control panel. I have a sounds and audio devices, which
when opened has a show on taskbar checkbox on the general tab. Also under network connections there is a checkbox to show icon when connected. Again these may require a reboot to persist.

didn't comprehend it. You were right....those checkboxes needed to be checked. I got my volume control and network connection icons back but still can't set what I want to show in the system tray.

I evidently need some luck. I'm running a full scan right now (using my laptop for this).

24. I'm freaked out.
560 invalid registry entries and 33 errors. It fixed the invalid registry items but I don't think it fixed the errors and guess what....I still have the original problem.

It should fix all the errors. Did the summary at the end indicate something was not fixed?
Run it a second time. 560 is a LOT!

28. Have you tried booting into Safe Mode?
Sometimes when I'm having weird symptoms with either my desktop/taskbar/icon cache, booting into safe mode and then back into normal mode clears it up somehow.

Worth a try?

32. Two possible fixes
1- Download Gibson Research's UnPlug n' Pray and deactivate Universal Plug n' Play Support. This was recommended to me as a fix for taskbar icon misbehavior several years back, and it has always worked for me. Read the web page to discover just what the utility is, and note that if it doesn't work you can run it again and reactivate the support.

I have absolutely no idea what the connection is between the utility and the icons, but at the least it will do no harm to your XP computer. Simply download and run (no installation is needed) and reboot.

2- Download and install Windows Power Toys Tweak UI. Many times simply installing this and rebooting will clear up a few problems. It has many settings within it that can be used to change your interface.

This utility makes it a one moment, one click thing for people who don't like to mess with the insides of XP.
