query regarding keywords and images

hi all
i'm trying to set up a small stock photo site with my own photos for sale. i wanted to create a search function, and therefore went through google for tips on how to add keywords for images so that they can be searched. unfortunately, most of the links were to photobucket type sites and of no use to someone who does not want to subscribe to their services. can anyone here help me?
i have average html skills, am building my site myself, and am familiar with javascript.

A google tip: You might try searching "html programming" first, then use search-within-results to find "keywords" or "search." That way you eliminate most of the non-related links first.
