Is there a way to make Acrobat Reader not annoying?
I finally turned off the obnoxious auto updates that Reader seems to do all the time.

Now, with the most recent version, 9.3, they invented a new amazing feature apparently. When I open a PDF document, after reading it for about 5 or 10 seconds, a popup says Content Preparation Progress and a status bar appears for about 30 seconds or so evaluating the fine pages or something, even though I was just reading them fine beforehand.

So then when I'm done reading what I want, I close Reader (like a rebel!) before the dialog disappears then another window pops up and says "Acrobat Reader has stopped working... We'll notify you of the problem... bla". All I wanted to do was open the document for a sec and see what was in it.

So anyway, yeah.

1. Have you tried Foxit pdf reader?

Try it and see if does what you need and then you can remove Adobe Reader.

3. If you install Foxit (which I have) use the "Custom" install option

It will try to install a toolbar and change your default search & hompage. Just untick those options. Also tries to install E-Bay shortcut, quick launch & start menu icons, untick that option on he "Setup Completed" page of the installation.

5. I guess this is humorous. I had to laugh. The only problem I ever
had with Adobe Reader is that it only reads. And does nothing else.

6. There was a time when Adobe Reader was small, usefull and quiet.
Now the God-Damn thing is "In-your-face" and takes up almost as much space as an Operating System.

Geez, Adobe....We just want to read a PDF Doc, not install a 200 meg program.

7. I use PDF XChange
http://www.docu-track.com/product/pdf-xchange-viewer

I used to use Foxit, but progressive releases were making it s-l-o-w, and the toolbar cruft it wanted to attach began to annoy me (plus, it'll no longer let me install in the folder I used to use, it now must reside in a "Foxit Reader" subfolder, no matter where you put it).

PDF XChange is snappier. Rendering is crisper. In some instances, Foxit text rendering can look like a cut up ransom note. And unlike Foxit, PDF XChange is available in a portable version.

If you're someone who just wants to view PDF documents, with no need for Javascript or the other bells and whistles, Sumatra PDF works great. It's under a meg in size, and is completely portable, never writing to the registry or outside it's own folder.
