Am I right to think this means the HD is ok?

1. Depends on your definition of "OK".
At this point Windows as fixed the problems to the best of its ability. If the drive is relatively new, I would not worry too much about it.

In any case, you should be doing data backups on a frequent basis in case the drive goes down for good.

2. I've got everything I care about backed up on an extra HD
Got that when the freezing problem started - having BTDT.

The only time I can always recreate the freeze is to right click on the desktop - does that make any sense to you? (That's not the only time it freezes, but it guarantees a freeze)

Anyway, thanks - and I'll keep up on those backups!

3. If right-clicking the desktop guarantees a freeze, have you considered
the possibility that the mouse is involved?

If you have a PS2 mouse, try a USB mouse. If you have a USB mouse, try a different USB port; if that doesn't work, try a different uSB mouse

Have you tried defragging?

If you really have copies of all your important files, and can't figure out the problem, why not try reinstalling the OS?

4. Hadn't thought of that one
I can certainly try swapping the mouse out.

Have defragged.

And I'm just a bit intimidated by reinstalling the OS. Not something I've done on my own yet!

5. It's not that hard
and you'll need to do it one day, but for now I suggest you run a Windows system file check.

Look out your Windows CD and shove it in the drive just in case System File Checker needs to access it. You may already have the necessary files sitting somewhere on your hard drive.

Go to Start/Run and type in:

sfc /scannow

Then have a drink, or several, while it does its thing.

6. I don't think I've got a windows cd, exactly
when the computer was first set up, out of the box, it instructed me in making recovery cd's - 12 of them is what it took.

It's also got a recovery drive (D). But no separate cd - or none that is easily identified!

Geez, it was all easier with my old 386, you know?

7. That's actually a good thing
It means that there is a recovery partition somewhere on your machine. This will contain the i386 Folder which in turn contains the crucial system files. If you're curious, go to Control Panel/Folder Options/View >>show hidden files and folders.

Generally when the i386 folder is present, the registry already points to it as the source of files, so go right ahead and run SFC /scannow.
