How secure are the website design, plug in features?
My husband spent the last ten days installing various plug ins to help him with his website design.

Ever since he did this, it has been harder to use the computer. For instance, often, I start in to do a reply to a DU OP, sometimes the whole text I type becomes a file under Firefox, and I can't get back to the panel where I need to be to hit "reply" and send my remarks off.

Then it starts to make me wonder if these plug ins are also good for the cyber punk and hacker types.

Any advice?

1. I'm not sure what's been done by your husband
But you could avoid messing with his settings by downloading and using an entirely different browser:

http://www.google.com/chrome

Then he can do whatever he wants with firefox as long as he leaves your browser alone.

2. You get good and bad plumbers
Electricians, teachers, accountants. There shouldn't be a difference, they alll have qualifications. We know better.

The same applies to all bits of software downloaded, including add-ons. Is you husband discerning about the software he installs? Does he investigate, read reviews, never install a beta version?

I bet he doesn't. Tell him to spend a few hours studying html and css and he will not need the various plug-ins. In the meanwhile, download MalwareBytes and be amazed at how much crap it finds on your computer.
