Help finding internet service please
My daughter is in need of finding internet service. Charter want's almost $4000 to bury the line, no one else on the street has their line buried. She sits around 500 feet from the main part of the road. She's looking into Hughes, Verizon wireless or whatever else may be out there. Could any of you smart pc people help me tell her what the best one might be. She has a 16 year old that does gaming online. Hope I've explained this ok, not very good at this. Thanks so much in advance for any help you are able to give me. Mikkie

1. What's available depends on location. You may do better posting in the state forum
for the appropriate state asking about what's available in the appropriate city

I used dialup for a long time then switched to Verizon wireless, but I think Verizon wireless is ridiculously expensive and has insane charges for exceeding contract. I currently use DSL: it's fast enough and less costly than wireless. But I don't know what's available where your daughter lives

2. Thank you struggle4progress
Forgot to say she has never had a phone line run back to her place either. She's in a very small town in South East Michigan. The street she lives on has Charter but they just want to much to run the line back to her place. Her only choice would be something like Verizon, Hughes, etc... Not even sure as to which one of these would be the best choice for the price & speeds. Again thank you very much

4. What would be the charge to put a phone line in?

I'm guessing once it's in, you'll get dial-up at least. But gaming? Oh boy.

6. She's like 500 to 600 feet from the main part of the road
They all seem to want an arm & a leg to get a line ran back to her. I'm surprised the electric company ran power back to her for free. Thank you

3. Stay away from Virgin Mobile Mifi
I am SO pissed at them right now. I bought this last summer, and thought it was great. $40 a month for unlimited. I bought special equipment to network my property so I could use it in outbuildings.

Well, a few days ago, it got REALLY slow. Like back in the old days when I had 28K America Online dialup.

Come to find out, Virgin Mobile oversold their capacity, and has now decided to dramatically slow down their speed.

They didn't bother to inform me (or any other customers, to my knowledge) of this, either. No letter, no e-mail, nothing. I found out by doing an online search (at work, so it didn't take hours) and found an article posted in PC Magazine about this.

Pissed doesn't even begin to describe how I feel -- it takes like 3 minutes just to load the Google search page.

I guess it's time to find something else.
