I have this little app
that allows me to print the contense of directories. It's really handy. There is a little window with this symbol ("."). When I hover my pointer over it, it says "File name pattern". What does it mean and what does it do?

1. The asterisk is a placeholder for the file name.
If you search with it just as it is, it will come up with ALL files. If you replace the just first asterisk with a name, it will find all kinds of files with that name. If you replace just the second asterisk with a file extension name, such as "jpg", it will find all your jpeg files no matter their name. And if you replace both asterisks with a name and a file extension type, it will find all files of that name and file type.

I hope that answers the question you were asking! :D

3. Wildcards
The "*" character is called a wildcard in English, I think.
"*" means "anything" (in 0 or more characters)
"?" means "any character" (1 character only).

If you enter "*.*", it means "any file name, with any extension"
But you can write more complex filters.
Examples:

"pict*.jpg"
All jpeg files that starts with "pict":
picture01.jpg matches
pict.jpg matches
pic01.jpg doesn't match
pict.gif doesn't match

"picture??.jpg"
All jpeg files with a file name made of "picture" followed by exactly two characters:
picture01.jpg matches
pictureXX.jpg matches
picture1.jpg doesn't match
picture123.jpg doesn't match
