DVD burner thinks all blank disks are CD's

When I insert a blank DVD, the autoplay box pops up and asks waht I want to do with this blank CD. A couple of programs refuse to recognize the disk as a blank DVD, while others (like Sonic) will allow me to burn to the blank DVD. When I use explorer to look at the drive, it shows it as a CD drive when a blank disk is in it and as a DVD-RW drive all other times.

I'm running Windows XP MCE.

DVD's play fine it in. The DVD's I burned using Sonic and a couple other programs worked fine as well.

I've googled this problem and see that others have had it, but I can't find a solution other than to trash the burner and start again. I don't want to do that, since the burner is a dual-layer lightscribe and only a few months old.

The problem seems to be with Windows, rather than the burning apps, per se.

Also worth noting, I suppose, is that none of the programs use that 'virtual drive' stuff (like Nero does, I believe).
