Anyone here have scaly friends?
Edited on Sun Oct-30-05 07:01 PM by wryter2000
My girl corn snake is sooooo mad at me because I won't let her near the male. She's sat at the entrance to her hide all day, staring at me. It's that time of the year for her, and she'll probably refuse to eat for a couple of weeks now.

In the meantime, the male is over in his cage, oblivious to her misery. Around about February, he'll start prowling his cage trying to get at her. Nothing keeps him from eating, though.

We go through this every year. I'd let them breed, but egg laying is too hard on a snakey's body, and then I might get babies that would refuse to eat. Even if I got through all that, I'd have to find homes for the babies. Then, next year, the whole thing would start again.

1. I have a bearded dragon. He's spiny, rather than scaly.
I do love snakes, though. I grew up with literally hundreds of them in my basement. My dad is an ameteur herpetologist and he breeds all kinds of snakes, frogs, and turtles. Check out his website at http://pingleton.com/ .

3. bunches
To Date:
0.0.2 Redtail Boas
2.2.6 Jungle Carpet Pythons
1.1 Amthystine(Scrub) Pythons
1.1 S Florida Kingsnakes
1.0 Okatee Corn Snake
1.0 Blond Madagasgar Hognose Snake
0.1 Hopi Rattlesnake
1.2 Mottled Rock Rattlesnake
0.0.1 Gila Monster
1.1.1 Chiapan Giant Musk Turtle
0.1 Mississippi Mud Turtle
0.1 Striped Mud Turtle
1.1.2 Flat Musk Turtle
1.3.18 Gulf Coast Box Turtles
2.4.13 Texas Map Turtles

As you can see a lot of these are juveniles. The Gila is adult, they are very difficult to sex without watching intra-specific behavior.

The Mississippi Mud was obtained as a mature adult in 1968. Yes, I've been doing this a while.

Don't blame you for not breeding your corn snake. Can't hardly give them away, I've seen them as low as $7 at shows, and that's insulting. Breeding certainly does take a toll on females, if bred at the earliest their growth is stunted and lifespan decreased. My female died this year at the age of 17-18 after throwing about 150 eggs in her lifetime, In retrospect I shouldn't have bred her so much.

The vast majority of my stock is either captive bred or rescues.
