Lost and Found.....or to the Pound?
Edited on Sat Nov-13-04 01:57 AM by Dover
What an interesting month. First a beautiful (mainly white) calico comes to my front steps in a panic for food. So I begin to feed her and then later, after getting more friendly with her, discover that she is clearly nursing some young ones. Then a few weeks later she deposits the darling triplets on the stoop and makes herself at home. I'm hesitant, and do my best to find homes...but no such luck....sigh.
Well, long story short, I fell in love with them all...and so did my dog who herds them around like little lambs and sleeps with kittens draped over him. However my other two cats who I've had for 6 years are not terribly happy so I try to keep them separated as best I can ( the front and back porches, or separate rooms in the house). So we are all sorta, kinda finally settling into a rhythm together...though things seem like they could easily erupt into chaos at any moment.

Well I know it's just life...'chaos happens'...but my life is empirical proof of Chaos Theory! Yesterday I opened my front door...it was a very chilly morning...to let the kitties and the dog out and as we stepped onto the porch every one of us snapped to attention like a drill team. Bounding toward the front door were THREE very young grey long haired, tabby kittens. They were not shy and were thin, shivering and desperate for food, staring up at all of us with big pleading saucer-shaped eyes. No mother in sight. All the other cats hissed their disapproval and scattered. The dog went into his roundup mode, sniffing and prodding the new additions to the flock with his nose. They were fed and placed in my bathroom where it is warm (with a litter box and more food), as I pondered their fate. I let them outside for a long while when the sun came out to see if a mother cat was around. Nope.

I CANNOT keep them! They are very sweet but I just can't take in more kittens. With the new family and my other two cats I already have SIX! So what can I do? I had already made the rounds calling friends looking for any takers when the first group of kittens arrived and you can see how successful I was at finding them homes.

HELP HELP HELP!!!! Now I'M in panic mode.

1. Poor babies....glad they found ya for a little while anyway
Hmmm....

call around for a no-kill shelter or animal rescue?
call a local vet and see if they'll take them?

You could always grab a cute kid and a box and head for a busy store, but you never know who those people might be, impusle "takers" might not be good parents.....so I'd vote for option a or b

Good luck.

2. Go here:
www.petfinder.com . You can list the kittens through a no kill shelter in your area, or the shelter may take them and list them for you. Simply do a kitten search using your zip code, and the shelter names and contact numbers will appear. Good luck!

3. What city are you in? Consider going to Pet Smart & Pet Co this weekend
and talk to the groups conducting pet addoptions there they always have rooms for kittens, they go to adoption homes fast.

7. Are those groups around every weekend at these stores?

Do they just allow you to hand stray animals over to them? Not sure how they work.

4. I really feel for you.
What a tough situation caused by idiots who refuse to spay or neuter their pets.

Perhaps you could run an ad in your newspaper? I've looked for pets in the newspaper before. Also, our vet has a bulletin board with pet notices. It's worth a try.

Good luck! You've got a big heart!

9. My daughter called a friend at a kitten rescue center in Austin . . .
They don't have room at the center right now, but she had some suggestions for the best way to handle your new visitors. The Austin Humane Society is no-kill. However, if they get an animal who is just not adoptable, they will send it to the city pound to be euthanized. They usually have a waiting list and weight requirements for the kittens they take in. You can get them on a waiting list and they also have lists of people willing to be foster parents until the kittens are big enough. She says they topically have to be at about two or three pounds before they can take them in.

Good luck with this. At least kittens are easier to find homes for than full grown cats. The woman at the rescue center said they are currently at more than double their capacity. Apparently they tend to have a lot of rescues this time of year.

10. I'd try posting it in the Texas forum as well
I foster kittens, but I'm in CA. There might be someone near you aching for long-hair tabbies!

11. and THAT's how we ended up with NINE kitties
Bless you :)..

Maybe your vet can help you with the names of people who might help you find homes.

If they are healthy, try Petsmart.. They place kitties all the time :)

12. Help with Kitties
Not sure where you live in Texas but I would suggest you contact a local rescue group and see if you can find help with placing them. Most groups house their animals in foster homes that stay pretty full so if you could at least house the kitten while looking for a home for them, it would help the rescue group immensely. We take pictures of our rescues and post them on the internet at www.petfinder.org. If you are in the Dallas area, I might be able to offer some more specific assistance. If not, look on the internet for cat rescue groups in you area.
