The photo accompanying this article will break your heart. I was astonished to learn that of the 1500 dogs at the Athens County (Ohio) shelter in 2005, 1,000 were euthanized for lack of an adoptive home.

Can you imagine paying $1,000 or more for a dog?

While that seems high -- especially in a day and age where the supply of available dogs greatly exceeds the demand -- that's what Athens County residents often pay at one of the most controversial stores in Athens, Petland.

When Petland came to East State Street in the late spring of 2004, local animal-rights activists protested the business, charging that it gets its dogs from questionable breeders, would exacerbate the local overpopulation of dogs and cats, and create more problems than benefits.

Supporters and officials of the national pet-store chain responded at the time that the business takes good care of its animals and provides a service that many people were driving out of the area to pay for.

So how has Petland affected Athens in the intervening year and a half?
