>> Citing problems in Holmes and Tuscarawas counties, state Sen. Robert F. Hagan announced Tuesday he is introducing legislation that will put a halt to widespread puppy mills in Ohio.
Puppy mills by definition are mass dog breeding establishments with horrendous living conditions characterized by overcrowding, filth, and lack of food, water and shelter that produce puppies for profit by selling them wholesale to the pet industry, Hagan’s news release stated.
“It is known throughout the industry that Ohio is a hub of abusive puppy mill breeders,” said Hagan, a Youngstown Democrat. “Currently, Ohio’s laws do not address the conditions of the animals within these puppy mills and the operators and middlemen of the animal cruelty problem. This is about torturing animals for profit. This is a cash crop for abusive individuals that must stop.”
<snip> According to animal welfare groups, when a consumer buys a dog that has been bred in a puppy mill, an inherent set of problems could possibly come with the purchase, including infestation of diseases, health conditions brought on by in-breeding or cruel living conditions as well as behavioral problems including aggressiveness, all requiring more training and medical care. Puppy mill dogs often have early on-set conditions such as tumors, blindness, bone structural deficiencies and periodontal disease, resulting in the removal of teeth. <<
