Poll question: Do you let your dog or cat sleep on your bed with you?
Swifty has been for about two months.

1. Sometimes
My guy (the dog that is) is about 90 lbs so when it's time for sleep, no, he gets kicked off the bed so the two humans can actually fit. In the morning, once hubby is up and in the shower, the dog is back on the bed.

We never used to allow this but he's getting older and is kind of clingy so it's something that makes us feel like it makes him feel close and loved. Dogs are pack animals and this one takes it to an extreme - we hug, he's right there with us - who could deny him such a simple pleasure?

2. We used to but it was just too uncomfortable.
I got them all comfortable dog beds so all four are still in the room with us. They have dog beds in the living room, too, so now they stay off the furniture there as well. It's a lot more pleasant for all of us!

3. Yes - We share our bed with 2 dogs (sometimes 3)
But they all weigh 16 pounds or less. My boy gets the pillow between hubby and me, one girl prefers the foot of the bed. The third sleeps with our son in his bed, but when he is gone on a sleepover, she sleeps with us too. The cat joins us only when it is really cold - then she insists on sleeping under the covers right next to me. The rest of the year, she prefers the leather couches in the family room.

5. Yes - 2 dogs every night
one under the covers and one on top of the covers. Another sleeps on the couch and the 4th sleeps on my guest room bed. (My home is kinda like a giant dog kennel)

9. Lol. I've always said that our cat Sammy...
owns our bed - she just rents our bed out to us. For as long as we've had this cat, she has loved being in the bedroom on our bed. She cries to get in every morning. We have four cats, but because they all don't get along, we figured the best thing to do was to give them the run of the house while we got some sleep behind closed doors. It has worked out well. During the day, we let them all crash on the bed if they want. Usually, only two cats gravitate to the bed and the other two are out in the living room.

7. They (2 dogs) start out on their own comforters on the floor
but during the night they come up on the bed. One is 86 lbs and the other is 45 lbs. They both come up on my side so I am between my husband and the dogs.

I feel like a sardine most nights.

8. The cats, not the dog...
Shari just wiggles too damn much. After bugging me about a half an hour for scritches, the cats will generally settle in a corner for the rest of the night - until they think it's breakfast time, of course.

10. No...my husband and I are both night owls, and when we
let our cats sleep upstairs with us they'd start walking on our faces at 5,6,7 a.m., often a mere 2 hours after we'd gone to bed. It was just sooo hard getting up with them at the crack of dawn just to open a can of food (dry kibbles that we coulud leave out wouldn't suffice, it HAD to be FRESHLY OPENED moist food). So, we set up fancy beds for each of them, plus their own food and water dishes for each cat (there are three) and restrict them to the downstairs rooms at night.

Sometimes if I get up at 6 or 7am for water or whatever I'll bring the cuddliest one up, though, give him his favorite food and wait for him to come and snooze by my side.

11. Do I have a choice?
I tried to shut the door on Oberon at night, but he frantically claws at it and howls until I give in. He sleeps on his back on one side of me (usually touching me with one or more feet), and Puck sleeps on the other side, under the covers and pressed against me. I can't move much!

This morning I awoke to Oberon making little trilling chirps at me. He was lying on his back and had my nose sandwiched between his two front paws. He was staring at me with this insane look on his face *sigh* cats are bizarre creatures!

15. Sounds like you need a dog added to your menagerie
or even a kitten (if raised with birds from a young age, they won't try to eat them). It's easier having a pet that you can cuddle when you're single. Being turned into the filling in a kitty sandwich every night doesn't always make for the best night's sleep, but at least I'm not lonely. :-)

22. Gabby would do better if he were at least ten pounds, yes. :)
I haven't "done" mammals in awhile because they tend to smell more than birds. I've thought about a kitten, but the smell of cat pee in the common walkway has dissuaded me. People let their cats outside and they spray everything...ugh. Cat pee is a very disagreeable odor.

Most dogs would be too large for an apartment and smell is still an issue. Maybe I should get a Moluccan cockatoo? :)

13. We have always kept the bedroom off limits
except to sick, injured or needing to be quarantined animals. They all seem to respect that, too...not coming in to the room even if the door is left open.

And we have had sick animals that have realized that they no longer belonged there and asked to be let out when they were well.

14. My cat not only sleeps on my bed with me
He sleeps on me! When I tuck myself in for the night, shortly thereafter Boots climbs right on top of the bend in my knees and burrows himself right there!

16. More like, they let me sleep with them on their bed
I have a trick though, if I want the bed to myself, I crank up the heat and they get too hot so they get off and either go outside or just down to the floor where it's cooler.

So I got a bigger bed!
That did the trick and I miss them if they aren't in bed with me.

20. O'Malley let's us sleep in his room

Everything of his is contained in our bedroom; his food, water and cat-box are all in the master bathroom. If we ever need to contain him, we just put him into the bedroom and shut the door. Our dogs are all outside dogs, but when they come in to visit, O'Malley guards the door to his bedroom. He's confident that he can whip them all with one paw tied behind his back, and he's got them bluffed even though they each could gobble him up in a couple of bites.

My husband goes to bed earlier than I do and shuts the door. If O'Malley doesn't go with him (he usually chooses to stay with me) he waits rather impatiently for me to go to bed. If I'm reading or watching TV and get up to get a drink of water or something, he runs ahead of me toward the bedroom door, watching me the whole time. Once he realizes I'm not going to bed yet, he follows me wherever I am going. We keep doing this until I decide to go to bed.

Once I've gone to bed, I leave the bedroom door open. O'Malley goes to the bathroom to eat, drink, and take a potty break. Then sometimes he plays what I call "Psycho Kitty"; zooming around the house, slipping and sliding on the wood floor, fleeing from some phantom only he can see. When he's through, he lays down at the end of the bed and grooms himself before going to sleep.

If it's just me in the bed, he'll lay closer to me where I can put my arm around him and snuggle.

21. Queen Sophie stays in the kitchen by the refrigerator
(she's no dummy, just a well fed Maine Coon) until everybody is in bed. Then, she picks whose bed to jump into, and generally jumps (18 pounds of cat) onto that person's chest, butts their forehead, and goes to sleep.

24. Absolutely
I have two cats, and they're in the bed every night. It's king size, so there's plenty of room. Besides, if I try to close the bedroom door they'll just scratch at it all night trying to get in.

26. You've got to be kidding. My little guy just expects it.
From the first night I brought him home, he has slept on my pillow. That must have been what he was used to. He belonged to an older woman, who died, so went through some rough times before found me. But, apparently, he was used to sleeping on a pillow, and headed straight there, on his first night with me, and I was just glad to be able to make him feel at home. I only need one.:-)

28. Oh yes. Always.
Some people act horrified at this, but I don't mind at all. I'm single, with a queen-size bed, so there's plenty of room, and it's especially comfortable on cold nights to be sandwiched in warm fur.

31. yes, that's the best part of having a cat!
of course, mine always manages to wake me up when HE wants to by walking across my face repeatedly... if that doesn't work, he sits on my face, so i can't breathe, all the while pretending he's not aware i'm suffocating...

them cats, they're smart creatures.

32. Of course.
Both cats in the bed every night. Wilbur (the larger one) sleeps on the pillow next to me, purring away, and Humphrey likes to sleep in my armpit. Once we all get situated, I am not allowed to move until morning - and then only if I immediately serve them breakfast. Although Mr. Sleepyhead is not the least bit amused by this, he has learned to live with it.
