This message, printed in a child's hand and accompanied by a crayon drawing, turned up Wednesday in a stack of Letters to the Editor:
"A cat has been stuck on a tree since last week. She was really scared so she ran up higher and higher. We went to the fire station but they didn't want to help the cat. Who can I ask for help?"
The letter was signed by Aaliyah, age 7. She listed her address and phone number, so we followed up.
Aaliyah's mother, Rena Taylor, took the call. It was Rena who told us the story of the cat.

1. WARNING: No happy ending here.
Very depressing article. I guess I'm missing the author's point (is there one?).

3. The Fire department does have a job to do
they wouldn't hesitate to go into a rich neighborhood to save a house. They could have shown good will to the neighborhood and the kids......

Way to go....show the kids that the world doesn't give a shit about those that are small and weak.

Yes it was only a kitten but that impression will be with those kids for the rest of their lives. They will never trust the Fire department again.

Geesh....
