Stupid dog got sprayed by a skunk tonight
Just gave her a tomato juice bath and am headed back into the bathroom, where she'll be spending the night, to try and rinse her eyes some more. She's still squinting occasionally and rubbing her face.

THIS IS THE MOST EXCITEMENT I'VE HAD ON A SATURDAY NIGHT IN YEARS...AND I'M TOO OLD FOR IT!!!

1. Forgot to post my question!
The smell isn't a normal skunk smell. It's kind of a weird pine/plastic/gasoline smell...hard to describe because I don't think I've ever smelled it before. Why is that? Does it have something to do with the age of the skunk? Or is it kind of a warning spray before they let out the "real" stuff?

I've lived here 9 years and this is our first skunking. The neighbor's dog got blasted last week, while they were on vacation and my son & the guy across the street were taking turns feeding & letting her out, so I guess it was only a matter of time before one of mine got it.

The poor thing looks so sad...she's not happy by herself in the bathroom and Buster isn't happy that she's not sleeping with him tonight. He's moping on the floor & won't even jump up on my bed!

4. Thank you!
I just checked on her (can't sleep, just like when my son was sick when he was a baby) and her eyes are much better. The stink isn't as strong, but it's still there. She definitely took a shot to the face, so I'll be heading out to the store first thing in the morning to get the peroxide and douche.

Thanks again for the links!

5. Daughter and dog were sprayed by skunk. Nothing worse than
up close and personal w/skunk. Dog in tub, lots of peroxide and dog soap, clean dog. Same treatment for human. Result is another story. No matter what you do, it seems to linger. Peroxide bath is the only real way to get rid of smell. Soak any clothing in Oxyclean for a few days. Throw in covered bucket and let sit. Smell will come out, even in leather running shoes.

My best to you, they both suffered. The tomato juice thing is an old wives tale.

7. I did the peroxide/baking soda bath today
Because that's such a strong solution, you can't use it on their faces and that's where she was the stinkiest. The website said to use an over the counter douche...so I went out this morning to the grocery store. In my cart I had two quarts of peroxide, a big box of baking soda, two big containers of vinegar, a 2 pack of Summer's Eve Ultra....and a box of panty liners for myself!! Needless to say, I used the self-checkout register because I didn't want the people behind me thinking I was having feminine hygiene issues!!

Gave her the bath when I got home and it made a big difference! I still detect a little stink if I get close enough to her face, but she's in much better shape than last night. Her eyes were back to normal this morning, too. She hated having them flushed last night and hated having to sleep in the bathroom. This was the first time ever that my two dogs didn't sleep together at night and all they did was whine! Her bankie & towels are soaking in a hot wash right now of vinegar, baking soda, & detergent. I'll let them soak overnight, start up the cycle again in the morning, then do an Oxy Clean soak until tomorrow night.

Right now, she's at my right foot and Buster's at my left, just as it should be.

6. You are never too old for adventure. Adventure is what it's all
about.
The skunk smell has all that smell in it. Pine tar, gasoline or kerosene, etc.
Sure the dog feels guilty about the way he smells, and that he was not able to avoid it.
Take the dog to the beach. A beach where the dead fish have washed up. The dog will run, be happy, and roll in the dead fish.
You won't notice the skunk smell any more.
My cat loves to roll in the dead fish. It disguises his odor. He figures that way the mice won't smell him coming.

8. LOL...think I'll stick with skunk!
After she got her second bath today, I went outside and sprayed straight vinegar all over the deck, then poured it around the perimeter of the deck. I think I remember reading somewhere that vinegar keeps certain critters away, so I'm hoping it'll work. If nothing else, it's gotten rid of most of the smell outside. A neighbor's dog got sprayed last week, so I guess it's that time of year.

What has me nervous now is that it's dark and pretty soon it'll be time to take the last pee pee of the night! I really am too old for two straight nights of adventure...unless Henry Rollins is involved!! :)
