Pumpkin pie must be made with MOLASSES--
Gear up for some Dean Thanksgiving; it is an historic one.

I know this because I am a Mayflower descendent myself. A good pumpkin pie needs a deep dish and some killer spices, but the primary ingredient (other than pumpkin) is molasses. Toss in some ginger, some cloves, some cinnemon and mace too, but without the molasses the thing is fried and bland like the pies sold at the grocery stores.

Forget the chiffon stuff, the bland, the store-bought "crap-in-a box." Get serious: buy the pie crusts and make some great filling using pumpkin, molasses, eggs, and spices. Then whirl your own real whipped cream (cream, powdered sugar, and a dash of vanilla) to top the serious pumpkin pie.

Happy Thanksgiving, Deaniacs!

1. I made pecan pies tonight.
I was sort of disappointed. It is the same recipe I have used for years, but it had a funny taste. Think it was the margarine. I checked it and it was mostly soy as the first ingredient.
Kind of an odd taste, just not the same. I don't like to use butter in pies, and the recipe calls for Bluebonnet.

Guess I will have to change margarines next time.

3. I LOVE Peacan pie
I used to eat it all the time when I lived in Florida. I don't think northerners know how to make a really good one though.

4. I like it too!
But then, I like a lot of things (too many).

2. I am not a pumpkin pie person
I know, it's sacrilege considering I am also a mayflower baby. But the recipe sounds good and I am going to pass it on.

There will be pumpkin, apple and lemon Meringue at my sisters today.

5. There was something on the History channel about the
history of Thanksgiving. It was interesting. One Thanksgiving in the 1700's, some town postponed Thanksgiving until the molasses arrived. It had to be hauled over a frozen lake or something.
