Sending light and love to Senator Kennedy and his family. May they be comforted by the love everyone is sending at this difficult time.

To Teddy - once you've had a wonderful family reunion, I know you will continue to support health reform from your vantage point. Thank you for all you have done for us.

I am editing this to add that my Dad just reminded me in an email that I was fortunate enough to meet Senator Kennedy. Dad said I was on his shoulders when he shook his hand in a line at an airport in Ohio when I was two years old, 1966.

What a great man, leaving an incredible legacy behind. People don't know what valuable laws he authored and passed throughout his many years in the senate that give us the true freedom that make us so proud. Thank you, Teddy, and may your reunion with those other great legacies of the Kennedy family be a joyous one!

11. I have never cried for a politician before
and never was it so well deserved. I pray that he continues to pull for us all on the other side...we need all the help we can get!

We have been told that many of those who are crossing over now are doin g so because they have more influence on the energies from that side of the veil, and the thicknes of the dark is too hard for them to handle on this plane...
so may he be a wonderful Lion in our corner!

(side note...my dad is 77 as well, and I was thinking last night that we are losing an entire "era" of people...maybe the paradigm/energy shift is part of that as well...? but I hope that doesn't mean my dad will be going anywhere anytime soon :( )

17. I think this Irish blessing is appropriate for his passing:
May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.

May God be with you and bless you:
May you see your children's children.
May you be poor in misfortune,
Rich in blessings.
May you know nothing but happiness
From this day forward.

May the road rise up to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the warm rays of sun fall upon your home
And may the hand of a friend always be near.

May green be the grass you walk on,
May blue be the skies above you,
May pure be the joys that surround you,
May true be the hearts that love you.

May perpetual light shine upon him.

One winter when I was going through a very rough patch on my own as a young woman back in the 80's, I decided to go for a long walk to the museums in Washington, D.C. I was the only observer who stopped to watch ice skaters at a skating ring behind one of the museums. I always wanted to skate and I stood their absorbed by the movements.

Suddenly I heard, "Hello, young lady." I turned around to see who one of the skaters was speaking to and it was I  And then I realized it was Ted Kennedy. He started laughing (dumbfounded look on my face) and I returned his greeting. Soon some tough looking guys in suits helped him off the ice. When he passed by he asked me, "Are you in school?" I said yes but it was difficult. And he said, "I don't care how hard it is. Stay there until you're finished." Then he was ushered off.

I'll never forget it. I needed that boost so badly and I can imagine that he knew exactly what to say to whoever he met

Like others here, I also get the feeling that perhaps he will be of some assistance from the great beyond in this health care bill. I may be an atheist, but I do believe that consciousness doesn't die. I'll bet President Obama gets health care passed in October. RIP my dear Teddy.

25. Thank you, Liberalmuse.
I firmly believe that force of consciousness that does not die, if nothing else, remains in our hearts and memories to continue the good fight. I was so happy to hear in the media today - that because of the strength of his goodwill - relate his passing directly to the fight for the health care bill; almost like the fulfillment of the last wish of the dying that everyone wants to achieve.
I think he saved my life and job back in the '90s with the Family Leave and Medical Act that I knew nothing about when I was battling a tumor. As far as my job (at a hospital!) was concerned, I had no more sick time and would be fired. Luckily someone said they can't do that and told me about the bill that went into effect that very year. From then on I knew what politics was all about.

I edited an NPR piece today on Ted and here is something that he said in a speech awhile back that fully describes him and my encounter:

Senator KENNEDY: And may it be said of us, both in dark passages and in bright days - in the words of Tennyson that my brothers quoted and loved, and that have special meaning for me now - "I am a part of all that I have met. Too much is taken, much abides. That which we are, we are. One equal temper of heroic hearts, strong in will to strive, to seek, to find and not to yield."

I broke down when he said, "I am a part of all that I have met."

In Ted's passing, I will miss something that was bigger than any one Kennedy from that generation. I will miss what should have flourished from their spirit like a wild bouquet of flowers.

Can you imagine Bobby winning the presidency, no Nixon, a generation ignited to go on and do better things, "not because they are easy, but because they are hard."

God, that seems so much harder now.

It's my hope for growing strength. We owe it to Teddy, don't we?

35. Me too...
I was actually thinking this...

while the stories and the scripture and last night's celebration..I have been really moved beyond words, and know there is an angelic resonance really "present" with all of us taking part in the event...yay! Mass consciousness!

and I was also thinking (the rational side of me, morbid as it is) that they are talking to a box with a body in it. That the spirit has departed, it goes in the first moments and last breath...but that it was still a symbol for so much. and yet his spirit has gone aound the block a few times and is still hanging out in the rafters listening to the great music and laughing right along with the stories!
and the prayers have all that much more impact, because he and his family of angels and even the christ energy is touching each of our hearts as they are spoken.
amen!
I have never been moved so much or so proud ,,,and I hope that I can carry some of that compassion and activism forward in my own world and life...

36. Me three
I suspect, after his otherworldly meet-and-greet, he's going to be sticking around for a while to help the country progress--whether it's just health care or a whole lot of things. I can't help but think about all the people who have crossed over lately...I get the feeling they're all helping in their unique ways.

As for the body in a box--well, gotta love the Catholics! (She says, as a survivor of the Catholic faith herself.) My cousin is an undertaker and to "show off" his handiwork (and his wife's makeup work), we've always had open-casket funerals.

Ick.

I remember when my grandmother died (back when I was 16), my aunt tried to get me to go up to the casket and kneel on the padded bench and say a prayer for her. I told her that my grandmother wasn't IN the casket; she was "elsewhere" and all around us, and she could hear me just fine from the back of the room, thanks all the same. Luckily other relatives defended me--secretly a lot of them think the open-casket tradition is quite barbaric. And yet we keep doing it...only recently have we dared to opt for closed casket, but rarely. I'd better not go before my aunt--I want to be cremated and have my ashes preside over a big party at my house instead of a funeral home and then a mass at a church I don't usually set foot in except for weddings and funerals.

But I digress...

37. Haven't been to a funeral for quite a long time
...one of my first ones was a catholic one - I was so upset by the time we went to the wake...I actually yelled at the family and told them what hypocrites they were.
(I was 13, so they forgave me)

I couldn't understand that at the service all the prayers were to get his soul out of purgatory or to make sure he GOT to heaven...like he didn't deserve to be there, and he was the greatest man...
than at the wake, they all lifted their glasses to his wonderful traits...

I was very upset and confused. Funerals still get me ... right there...(heart chakra)

my dad is the same age as Teddy was...and he has been deteriorating for a few years now, my mom is about to get the dr to revoke his licnse and she has to start planning for at what point she will have to let go of taking care of him, yikes...and nobody wants to talk about it and my dad is angry everytime she points out he is losing his marbles... it's not good - he has had a war with God and fears death and refuses to see his own need to let go and let others do things for a change. what do you do when the patriarch refuses to pass on his wisdom? sucks really, I wish I could get close enough to him to have learned a thing or two - and now he is too far gone to even teach anything much, and too full of bitterness and fear to love his way through it.

it really brings forth my own mortality too, that I am going to be the 'standard' bearer for my own family sometime - I better get shakin' and make some kind of difference

38. Big Italian family--we end up going to at least one funeral a year
I tend to forget that most people don't ever go to a funeral and aren't used to them. For us, it's a habit--an unpleasant one, but something we don't think twice about.

But you're right--what the heck is up with the whole purgatory concept--that after everything a person has done in his or her life, they STILL need a campaign to convince God that s/he deserves to go to "heaven"?
:wtf:

Yet another reason I'm an ex-Catholic, I guess.

Sorry to hear about your dad. Sending light to dispel his fear.

I hear you about the family thing. I was just thinking the other day that my mom and my aunt (her sister) are the last of the older generation (along with a few of their cousins). My mom is the linchpin to the rest of the family--so what happens when they're gone? I'll have to make a concerted effort to stay in touch with my cousins or end up not having any family at all, aside from my brother across the country. A daunting task, to say the least. :(

Home, Home We Welcome You Home

His return was celebrated, his strength renewed and I too feel he is back already at work. The movie Always keeps popping into my head. where Richard Dreyfuss' character soul returns as a spirit guide to a man doing the same job he had done (putting out forest fires with an adapted wwii bomber) whispering encouragement and advice in his ear at critical moments.
