Riddle me this, ASAHers, the sequel (emphasis on "eeeek!")
So on Saturday I posted this thread http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=245x108121 about the persistent dreams I had (and now my mother has had) where I have a daughter. So many ASAHers were so kind as to speculate on what it meant, and I appreciate it.

And now I think the angels are having a laugh (as they are wont to do) because I'm fussing about it. Check out what happened last night:

I was doing laundry. My second-to-last load was the bath towels. I pulled the whites out of the washer and put them in the dryer, checked around inside for stray items (all clear), then loaded the towels, which are all a greyish blue. Note that the towels went from hooks in the bathroom to an empty laundry basket to the washer, mmkay? No detours along the way, I mean.

Load done. Pulled out the towels. Out came a HOT PINK child's sock. Old Navy. Toddler size 2/3.

Yeah, a girl's sock. Sure, MG Jr. used to wear Old Navy socks, but none of his were hot pink, and he hasn't worn one in years. The last time a little girl who would wear hot pink socks lived in this house was four years ago--the renters who were here when we bought the place had about 75 kids--some theirs, some they babysat in their illegal daycare.

I know there are all kinds of rational explanations for why a child-size pink sock would show up in my laundry four years on--I do. Really. It had a tangle of lint on it, so I presume it was stuck in a pipe or something and it took four years of water whooshing through it to dislodge it. Yeah, that makes sense...even though we've never had a water flow problem in the pipe to the washer. And even though, as Mr. MG says, there are screens and filters and things and a sock just CAN'T a) go UP a water pipe from a washer and get stuck there and b) come whooshing out four years later.

But whatever. I am willing to entertain any and all explanations as to how this happened. More important however, is the question "why NOW?" And that brings me back to the angels, who have an impish sense of humor sometimes.
O8) =

The universe is a freaky place...!

5. I thought you knew that clothes dryers were teleportation devices?
:P

I can't remember the author's name now as I think it was in an anthology, but there was one of those humorous science fiction short stories about why we always end up with clothing items that don't belong to us, and missing others. I think the main character was an engineer, and after finding things like plaid socks that he didn't own and losing just one sock of a favorite pair, he decided to hook up all his electronic equipment to the dryer. Somehow, he discovered that they were teleportation devices, if only accidentally invented that way ;)

So, in exchange, someone either got an extra towel/wash cloth, blue-gray, or they'll receive a hot-pink sock then next time you wash that particular sock. You should try that. Wash that sock and see if it disappears again

7. Gasp! Our "chickie" washcloth did disappear!
I put the towels away not five minutes ago, and I realized that one of my son's animal handpuppet-type washcloths was missing. I have the bear and the porpoise, but the chickie is gone. That must have been the tradeoff! Think if I wash the sock it'll find its way home and we'll get the chickie washcloth back?

11. yes, maybe
What are you going to do with the pink sock? I would say, try keeping it someplace where it won't get lost and see what happens. This is a really cool story.

I don't think this is the end of it. There will be a Part 3 on down the road. Can't wait!
