My little bird needs prayers
Perry, my "male" once- very abused and neglected rescue parrot, turns out instead to be a "Peri". She has laid one unbearably cute little (infertile) egg.

Unfortunately the rest of the clutch isn't going as smoothly, and she is significantly overdue for the next egg. If I find another egg on the bottom of the cage this morning, good (but she still has to struggle through on average another two to four eggs to complete the clutch, and it has been a struggle for her); otherwise I need to call the head of the rescue group that placed Peri with me, and we will have to find her vet care this holiday eve (care that, once found, I'm not sure how I will pay for).

It was good to see her happy for quite possibly the first Christmas in her life; now she's in pain, back to plucking herself, and at some risk of serious health issues. Please pray for her.

3. 3 tips to help eggbound hens
Edited on Thu Dec-31-09 10:30 AM by northernlights
Years ago, my Saki was eggbound with her first, unexpected eggs. I found her one night as I was going to bed, whistling in pain hidden under a piece of paper.

1. If you can squeeze a little oil into her vent with an eye-dropper it can help the egg slide out

2. Feed her a couple drops of olive or other veggie oil, again with an eye-dropper. That can help the egg slide out as well.

3. If you can set her up to be sitting with a gentle steam bath, that will help relax the muscles around her vent, and again help the egg slide through. The way I was able to do this was to fill the bathroom sink with steaming water, place a grate over the sink, set a small hospital cage on the grate and then cover the cage with a towel.

Best of luck and healing white light to Peri...but please try the tips above. They can mean life and death as if an egg breaks inside her, she will die quickly of egg yolk peritonitis...

10. NL, I am repeatedly amazed at your wealth of knowledge
as well as your accounts of your experience with animals. Ever think of working for a rescue/shelter?

14. someday I will, but right now
I get burned out caring for my home fur-babies.

I expect that someday when I'm too old to reliably care for them 24x7 at home, I'll care for them at a shelter...

Unless I win PowerBall, in which case I'll quit the regular job for good and set up a rescue operation for fur and feather and wrinkled greenskin babies.

Back when my bird addiction got underway, I subscribed for a couple years to Birdtalk Magazine and learned a lot. I stopped subscribing when I started recognizing the edited/recycled articles, lol. I was also fortunate in that I had 3 very gifted avian vets to turn to. The best of them had international clients who used to send her x-raysfrom Europe for diagnosis. She's fantastic...best run vet office around. She even has a little grieving room set up with dim lighting and living room furniture so furbabies could pass in their people's arms and then they could sit in the room for however long they needed to...Actually I was fortunate in Mass to have some top-notch equine vets to turn to as well.

4. Maybe the parrot rescue folks have a relationship with
a vet that will give you reduced rates -- or even let you pay for her care in installments.

I pray that little Peri lays her eggs and is healthy and happy.

7. MY prayers are here for Peri

What kind of a parrot is she?

Ask the question "what would it look like if Peri's delivery went smoothly and without a hitch".

After all, she got the one egg out okay. The rest come one after another. I'm understanding that the pain of laying is frightening her and she's holding onto the eggs because of being abused and suffering pain in her life before her rescue. Pain is associated with bad things, not birthing.

She's smart. Let your communication flow to her and give her understanding.

And what northernlights said!

I love parrots. :loveya:

I get the feeling she'll be all right. But definitely follow NL's advice--some good stuff there.

Keep us posted.

11. Rescue Remedy spray might help. I know it is safe for pets
but not sure about birds. If she's nervous or worries about pain, this might take the edge off her anxiety. Also, soothing music might help to calm her.

17. Apart of the oil and the rest
keep that bird in a darker place and chiefly calm. That will help as well.

19. Sorry, I was exhausted after this and a number of unrelated issues-- Peri is, well, so-so
Edited on Thu Jan-07-10 08:20 PM by Oak2004
She turned out to have laid the egg she had some trouble with and either hidden it or eaten it (both I and a friend who was helping out have a pretty good idea "when", but not "where", though the x-rays showed what may have been shell material in her gut).Nonetheless, she does not look quite right to me, and she has taken up plucking again with a vengeance.

What she looks, to me and to the vet, is tired. She hasn't been sleeping well since I came back from the hospital. I think she feels she needs to keep an eye on me so I don't leave again (I left for the hospital in the middle of the night, and it was clear from the first that she had had some kind of past trauma in the middle the night, perhaps a drug raid she was likely confiscated during). I'm going to try some Avi-calm ( http://www.avitec.com/AviCalm-Calming-Supplement-p/calm.htm ) and Featheriffic ( http://www.avitec.com/Featheriffic-Feather-Conditioning-Supplement-p/fr.htm ), as they seem to work well for a lot of overstressed and plucking parrots of her species. And, I need to get her into bed earlier. She goes into a frenzy of plucking if I cover her cage with anything but the lightest cover, and she wakes up at the crack of dawn, blackout curtains notwithstanding.

Now off to make bedtime happen earlier than the usual midnight tonight.
