Please send love to my mom. Possible Open Heart surgery tomorrow.
My mom had a heart attack Friday night. I have been with her since she arrived at the ER and stayed with her up until she was transferred last night to a regional heart center (at our request) about 90 miles from here. Her condition is stable for now, and they are looking at bypass surgery as soon as tomorrow. The final decision on that rests in the results of today's testing.

As some of you may recall, we lost my dad to congestive heart failure two years ago, and we lost Kev's mom to cancer this last summer. I can't say I think that makes any of this any "worse" to deal with than it would be for anybody else, but I gotta admit I was kinda hoping for some good health for everyone for a while--ya know?

I have an early afternoon work meeting that I absolutely could not reschedule and after that I am hitting the road to go be with her. I will be in a hotel for the next couple of days and probably out of touch with you guys. I will be back here when I can.

Her name is Sarah and any strength, prayers, or good will you can send her way will be much appreciated.

1. sending love and healing vibes
to your mom and your whole family. And yeah, hopefully the good health will return to your family after this procedure. I know people who have done very well after bypass surgery. I'm glad you have her at a regional heart center.

surrounding her in a protective golden egg of light. One of my cousins had bypass surgery and he lived another twenty five years so prognosis is pretty good.

21. Updates on my mom!
Thank you to you all for your help and energy! Mom did not get out of surgery until last night around midnight. It was a very long day for us all. Her surgery went well, but it was delayed by several hours because the surgeon had a patient that was ahead of mom that ended up with some complications. As a result, her surgery was pushed back by about four hours (thus the late time of finish.)

Today has been spent in the ICU. We are only allowed in for 15 minutes every few hours. She is progressing, and is off the breathing tube now. They are talking about moving her out of the ICU into what they call a STEP ward which is slightly less intensive monitoring. We should know later this evening if she's moving today or tomorrow.

Her Doc was very specific that mom was lucky that she didn't have a much bigger heart attack given the large amount of blockage she had in three of her major vessels. He was also very specific in saying that the biggest "danger" period is the 24-48 hours post-operative. We are coming up on the 24 hour mark, and so far her recovery has been good. Cross your fingers--we may be on the back side of this crisis...

They are saying plan for another five days in the hospital at a minimum, and then from there mom will go to a rehab clinic for at least a month. That clinic will at least be a lot closer to home so we can be with her and not have to be away from home. I miss my computer hugely--I am siting here in some waiting room on a public computer that some lady just vacated. I am amazed at how people CAMP on these things.

Again, bless you all for your generous help. I think it has been a huge boost to my mom and it has certainly meant an awful lot to me.

23. Wonderful news ...
... that's what they did with my father-in-law. Step-down, hospital and then rehab. She will just need to take it slow and not be frustrated with herself if she's not feeling "back to normal" immediately.

I will continue to keep your family in my thoughts and prayers. Thanks for letting us know!

30. Sorry to hear this.
Is she open to alternative methods? There are ways to unclog an artery-through chelation or enzyme therapy to name a few. MUCH less expensive and safer. Best wishes.

31. More good news to update you all!
Mom is recovering. There have been some moments in here that have been hugely scary, but her progress has been fairly steady. She has one drain tube left to come out and they are hoping that will come out tomorrow. She is able to walk a short distance (with assistance, of course) and she is finally starting to regain her appetite. She told me this morning when I called her that she is feeling "much better" today.

I am also feeling better for having slept in my own bed. The family seems pretty happy to have me back home (even the cat who slept plastered to me all night!) I got to sleep really late this morning and I am just sitting here drinking coffee now! I feel like such a lazy sluggo, but I also realize that I was pretty much at the end of my reserves by the time I got back home. Today my brother is with Mom and some of the Aunts and Uncles were gonna go over to see her--so I am taking today for my own "recovery."

We are hoping to get Mom transferred back here to a rehab center sometime later this week. The paperwork is done and the docs and therapists are all on board with it--so with any luck at all we should have her back here and settled in locally by this time next week.

Thank you, all for your prayers and strength. We are truly blessed.

Laura
