3. reminds me of AOL astro site in early 90s, members talked of how many extra planets back then.
said that the math calculations from new instrumentation show that there must be several "undiscovered" planets waiting in the wings. even said astrologically that by mid Aughts (2000-2010) 'discovery' of at least 3 new ones will be made, and at least another 2 more to go several years after that. said the debate was at least 14, but depending on how you calc certain asteroids, up to 27 planets -- but many were siding on 14.

this was around 1993-94, and pluto was still a planet, not a planetoid. i amusingly told other people this in the 90s -- who thought i was crazy -- and by now they just stay uncomfortably silent when i ring it back up. well, if the math works...

4. I guess I don't understand
why Hubble can see billions of miles away but hasn't seen any of these extra planets yet? Maybe they're just not looking for them? Or maybe the sun's in the way?

Science makes my head hurt.

5. because space is big. same reason things stayed secret in oceans, forests, deserts...
you can have the most amazing instruments to view, but if you aren't looking in the right place at the right time, oh well! :)

interestingly, Hubble was only recently out in space when i was digging around in that forum. at first Hubble was a joke because it had a lens issue (someone did the calculations wrong and screwed up the telescope's initial images) and everything was blurry. oh how the jokes were made. but now that they've fixed it, and added more telescopes to observation, we find wonderful new things -- like new, distant planets! :D
