Runes
I have recently been led to get a set of runestones. I am curious as to how other people use the Runes in their spiritual practice.

1. As with most divination methods...
...there is no "one way."

When I work with people, the main idea is to let them feel into what they want to do with any of the methods.

Some use the runes by pulling one out of the bag at certain key points -- before a "big" meeting, special day, important week/month/season.

The way you come to the method may also become a ritual to you, thus making the doing exactly as important as you feel it should be.

Your routine can be anything you consider sacred, or even any degree of sacredness you attach to this.

Here are a few ideas (yours would be best): quiet place, candles, music, clear space.

One you pull the rune, touch the piece, consider the design, hold it for a moment. Perhaps. Then, use the book to read. Consider the many correlations to your life. You might want to journal with this information, or log it in some way. You might want to keep the rune out in view for a period of time. Or not.

The main idea is to infuse this experience with your own sense of importance or ceremony.

Rituals, surprisingly, do cement our lives.

2. They're nice, but seem to basically be a very simplified version
of Tarot. Just my 2cents. :)

4. I used to use rune cards instead of the stones
There are sooo many ways to work with runes and tarot and as long as it feels "right" i think anything goes.

One way would be to carry a particular stone with you if you were trying to develop the qualities it represents.

5. I use both Runes and Tarot
I find the Runes give me quick answers to questions and the Tarot give me much more detail in the answers to my questions. But I LOVE working with Runes. I love the wya they *feel*.

6. I never use runes for divination actually
Guess I'm weird like that, LOL. The few times I have tried using runes in divination I've gotten nothing from them...they just didn't "talk" to me at all (FWIW, I get the same reaction when I try reading with the Rider-Waite deck. I just go blank with that one.).

OTOH, I use them in meditation sometimes and really get a lot out of it.

7. There is only one book that presents the traditional system.
And it's not Blum.

The Enchanted Alphabet: A Guide to Authentic Rune Magic and Divination by Dr.James M. Peterson

It's out of print, but you can find copies used.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0850307651/qid=1100623389/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl14/102-4282540-1339306?v=glance&s=books&n=507846

Also, avoid those little ceramic "stones." The old tradition requires that the individual runes be marked on sticks, etc. for divination purposes.

Runestones, properly speaking, are large stones erected as monuments and carved with Runic inscriptions.
