STARGAZER FLOWERS

Specializing in Weddings and Other Special Occasions

Name
Address
Phone Number

____________________

The writing would be in a script (handwriting) style, in red, with a picture of a bouquet including stargazer lillies in it, something like this: Another version would be to have it read like this: StarGazer Flowers, with upper and lower case letters.

If you want to see what the script actually looks like, it's "French Script MT" in Microsoft Word.

Feedback gladly welcomed.

23. I'd almost suggest a stylized version of that photo as the logo.
Photos of flowers are gonna be more expensive to put on letterhead and business cards.

I'd suggest that you consider having someone you know (like that nice graphic artist you are married to!) take that bouquet photo and stylize it to emphasize the shooting star motif a bit.

That would allow you to pick a single color for you logo and that cuts down on print costs a lot. If it is designed in Black & White it will also assure that later on it can be colored however you WANT it to be. I doubt that print costs are gonna be huge thing for your business over time, but it will impact early on when you are first setting up and getting started.

Good luck!

Laura

4. Wow, votes! Great info!
"Giving color and warmth" has always been important to me. And right now, stripping away the "shoulds and shouldn'ts" is paramount.

I chose "Stargazer Flowers" as the name of my business because of the conversation here in another thread about stargazer lillies. They were MY wedding flowers, and today, next to my table at a restaurant, was a beautifully framed pictures of stargazer lillies.

This just feels RIGHT, if you know what I mean.

I really appreciate you looking up this info for me.

9. Stay away from red...
I recommend you do not use red. In fact, your logo (or text in this case) should be designed first in BW and then color should be added. (You'll need BW for faxes and inexpensive printing projects.) Reds in text tend to bleed, can be difficult to read, and are indistinguishable from green to those who are color blind.

Be sure your designer creates a BW version and then supplies you with 1-, 2-, 3-Pantone color (if necessary) and 4-color CMYK graphics in EPS format.

Make sure your photograph is high resolution or you will experience pixelation problems if you try to enlarge it over 100% of its actual size. (You may need a huge picture for signs one day.) Also, be sure you have a grayscale version because you won't always want to pay for four-color printing.

If you're doing this all yourself, be sure to check with your printer before starting anything so that you can obtain the proper specifications and use the proper software and font type. (I don't have the font you chose, so I can't comment on it. Ask people who don't know the name of your business if they can read it. Also, print it at a small size and see how readable it is.) You and your printer will be glad you did this and it will save you both time and money in the long run.

Good luck!

(FYI: I'm a graphic designer, can you tell.)

11. Thank you for the suggestions!
MrSG is also a graphic designer. I emailed a copy of the design, in color, to his workplace where he has professional photoshop and another program he uses, so he can play around with it on his end.

Right now, I'm mainly trying to get something together to print up some business cards prior to my daughter's wedding, but your suggestions definitely need to be taken into consideration, with an eye to the future.

would you call yourself a boutique? Like Stargazer Boutique of Flowers?

p.s. when you get your business running don't forget to inc. yourself. It is the best thing to do. Self employment tax goes bye bye for one.

As I was typing this response, I thought, maybe I could use "Florals" instead of "Flowers", as in Stargazer Florals. Something to thnk about.....

Also, thanks for the suggestion about incorporating myself!

21. I am leaning toward Florals as well.
It is a bit different, and strikes a more formal note.
Which is the feeling you want to give since you are
targeting a formal market, weddings and spec occasions.

BTW I have noticed that most of the cut flowers around
here are coming from Ecuador. Just FYI.

24. Honest opinion
I love the use of "star" and its connection to your astrology interests. However, I don't think it's wise to name your business after one particular flower because people may think you use or emphasize that particular flower. Some people don't like stargazers, because they're too fragrant; some people are allergic to them; stargazers are inappropriate for dinner arrangements because they're too fragrant. The name may cause you to lose some business; it should attract as much business as possible.
If you don't mind, I'm going to put my thinking/emoting cap on and come up with some other names.
All the best to you in following your dream.

Although by far the best flower shop in which I worked was named "Tiger Lilly".

Maybe adding an apostrophe to Stargazer? (Stargazer's Floral ___________ (something to define .. maybe 'Stargazer's Floral Events'...

SG . hey those are your initials! Star Gazer's Floral (Designs)(Events)(Specialties)...
You'll find just the perfect touch.

27. I've had the same thoughts, regarding the name I came up with.
That's why I thought of changing it to Stargazer Floral, which I think indicates that I don't deal only with Stargazer lillies; I can do any type of flower someone wants.

I really feel a kinship to having "stargazer" as part of the name, but your points are definitely something to consider. Thanks for your input!

29. Might I suggest--
Doing a "tag line" after "Stargazer Florals" that describes your business such as "weddings and special events". That way people won't get confused. There is a shop in Laguna Beach called (I think) the Blue Iris. It is very successful and I don't think their association with one flower has hurt them one bit. Best of luck.

30. Exactly, Bluestar.
That's why under the name of the business, I put "Specializing in Weddings and Other Special Occasions."

I am so drawn to having "stargazer" as part of the name of the business, but I really don't want to give people the idea that I only deal in stargazer lillies.

And in the sample picture I included in the OP, there are other types of flowers in the bouquet. I found other pictures I could use also, with lillies mixed with other types of flowers. I want people to know that I'm not a one-trick-pony, as it were. So indicating that I specialize in weddings, etc., AND having a picture of a bouquet on the business card that has other types of flowers in them would, I think, help convey that.

It's settled then, LOL.

A couple of others have said that they know of florists with a particular flower in their names and are doing well. And, you said that you will also be stating that you specialize in weddings and other occasions. So, I don't see a problem anymore.:D

And, I'm still partial to Stargazer Florals too. :-)

35. I also like Stargazer Floral' better. However, I think that you should be certain...
to do another numerological check on this new name since the earlier one was done on 'Stargazer Flowers'.

I think that In Search of Sanity's concern would normally be a bit of an issue. However, my guess is that most people don't even know that there's a particular flower with Stargazer in its name -- at least I didn't. Given this fact, I don't think that it will be a big deal.

36. That's a lovely name...
...in my opinion. It has a very nice sound, and the picture is very pretty, too! Good for you, moving ahead with your dream by picking out a name, deciding how you want your brochure to look, etc--that's a wonderful affirmation in itself (action) ;)!

Will you be making the brochure yourself? :)

Don't know if you're looking for training of any kind, but I heard of a school here in Socal with an excellent reputation. They have intensive courses of a few weeks (I think--don't quote me, as I'm not entirely sure). But here's a link to their site if you're interested:

I will probably enlist MrSG in the process, since he is a graphic designer, and has programs at work that are good for that kind of thing (brochures, etc.).

I need to find something around here that would be short-term, as far as formal training. I know a lot about designing flower arrangements, bouquets, etc, but it never hurts to learn more. Most of the programs I know of are one-year programs, which i don't really want to do.

This just feels right, you know?

38. Absolutely...!
(on feeling right);) So important to do something that is fulfilling to you.

You're so fortunate having a graphic designer in the family. That will make your brochure, cards, etc. a breeze!

Check around as far as training. Sometimes adult schools offer short term programs, I know the ones near me do. They offer floral design short term courses year round. Most are offered 4-6 weeks, meeting once or twice a week. I know something will open up for you!
