Outside watching the eclipse with my family--drinking a Pina Colada in the snow
Yep, we all trooped outside to watch. Didn't last to totality because it was past bedtime on a school night and because it is single digit temperatures--but it was amazing. Picked out the major constellations and talked about using the North Star as your guide.

Makes my blood run faster and it felt right to do it with the family.

Peace to you all! May the new moon bring you blessings!

1. We did the same thing!
Minus the pina colada, though--but it would have been a nice addition! MG Jr. expressed an interest in seeing the eclipse (challenge o' de day: explaining an "eclipse" to a 4-year-old), so Mr. MG dug out the spotting scope and the tripod. We set up on the sleeping porch off the master bedroom, bundled up, and looked at the moon and found Saturn (and saw a couple of its moons!) before it was Jr's bedtime. There was a pretty big "bite" out of the moon by the time we called it quits. Danged freezing out there! Yike! But I love eclipses, and it was LOTS of fun sharing one with MG Jr. for the first time.

4. Hubby mixed the cocktails up.
He decided we needed the "anti-freeze." :)

Daughter Dear (10 years old) loved it and was fascinated by it. She has been into astronomy for a long time and this is just a hoot to share with her.

Our next "big" thing will probably be the Perseids this Summer simply because this was SO cold. The Perseids hit usually in late July or early August and we usually do those with all the neighborhood kids. Last year we did a weenie roast (with S'Mores!) and then played light tag until it got nice and dark. Then we all trooped over to the school yard and laid down in the grass to watch the show.

Yeah, we probably ARE kinda strange by some folks' standards.

:)

5. Something to consider is to travel the night of the Perseid high point.
I was on a jet several years ago when it came around and it was really something. Too bad the windows were unclear, aged plastic :/

6. OMG that reminds me of last year
MG Jr. was only 3, but he had seen references to shooting stars on his kids' TV shows, so when the Perseids came around, we talked about them and I promised to take him outside to try to see some. We put a blanket down on the grass in the backyard, but the mosquitoes were getting to us, and Jr. was getting impatient, as it was still too light out and nothing was showing up. Finally, after about five minutes, he rolled over, flopped on top of me, and said, "Mama, I don't believe you." Believe me what? "That there are shooting stars."

Hee. We gave up with a promise to try again next year. Maybe this time we'll make it 10 minutes! I have to prove to him that they do exist! (This year I'll bring the skito repellent.)

8. MG,
family vacationed near Michigan dunes few years ago, toasted marshmallows by lake and then watched! Had great times! Don't recall any skitos.

2. It's warm here. Short sleeve weather..
but overcast. All I can see is a bright orange glow diffused by clouds.

7. Good for you!
:)

the forecast was bad for this week, but we ended up with clear skies (more or less) Anyway, I also got to see the eclipse (in between other stuff and obligations)
What I didn't see is the progress, but I saw the full moon emerge thereafter, albeit it took a long time..

9. I was out off and on.
It was earlier here in the west, and it started before I left work. I had evening chores, dinner, etc., to manage, but was outside for part of that, and took some moments to enjoy.

We didn't stay out to watch it the whole time, though. In the 20s out there, we kept warm inside, and trooped out several times to watch until we needed to get warm again.

We had a great view; the persistent cloud cover we've had all week unaccountably dispersed in time for clear viewing.

:hi:
