JANUARY ASTROLOGICAL OUTLOOK January gives us the first of our Mercury retrograde periods of 2009 beginning 1/11-2/1. Mercury goes retrograde in Aquarius and moves backward into Capricorn. As we all know too well, this affects communication, transportation and life in general, so it is best to remain flexible and check and recheck all plans, particularly if you have planets in Gemini, Virgo, Capricorn and Aquarius. As usual, it takes a bit of time for life to get back in balance, so expect that by 2/20 the effects of this trickster planet are no longer felt. The Full Moon in January is 1/10, which brings the feelings into focus and the challenge of balancing career and personal needs to the forefront of our "to do" list. Jupiter finishes up with its year long visit to Capricorn as it enters Aquarius on 1/5. There are probably no people with planets in Capricorn that didn't have a wild ride last year and now the baton of change is passed to those with planets in Aquarius, as opportunity, travel and general good fortune becomes a gift for the next 12 months. With most of the planets in earth and air this month, this is a natural time for practical goal setting, review of career possibilities and reorganization of all the practical affairs of life: health, finances, work and clutter. With no planets in fire signs, don't look for much excitement, and know that those with planets in Aries, Leo and Sagittarius will be more subdued than usual. On 1/26 with the New Moon in Aquarius, there is a Solar Eclipse, which is one more indication that those with planets in Aquarius will have a year of profound change and unexpected opportunity for growth. Mercury is the most active planet this month, beginning the month in Aquarius (1/11), moving retrograde on 1/11, and re-entering Capricorn on 1/21. This should focus all of us on freedom and how it balances with responsibility, a time of further definition of the issues of change versus status quo. The Election Day pattern of Saturn opposite Uranus which intensifies these issues will come back for act 2 in February, so we get another chance to decide what we believe. The final act will occur in September, 2009. This pattern occurs from Virgo (Saturn) to Pisces (Uranus), which highlights the facts and the spiritual truths and how they balance one another. Mercury joins Jupiter on 1/18 which should be a day of good attitude for all of us, and joins the Sun on 1/20, giving a boost to energy and optimism. On 1/27 Mercury backs into Capricorn and hits Mars, making it a time when anger threatens to take over our communication. Take a breath and think about it before you release a hostile statement. Venus enters Pisces on 1/3, where its energy is elevated by feeling and spirituality. This is a wonderful time for those with planets in Pisces, as they will bask in the elevated love energy of Venus. On 1/22, Venus joins Uranus, bringing sudden feelings, chance meetings, and/or new creative opportunities. This is particularly true for those with planets in Taurus, Libra, Aquarius and Pisces. On 1/24 Venus and Saturn form a pattern of more grounded look at reality as a counterbalance to inflated feelings. Mars energizes Capricorn all of January, and the rest of us should experience this as a call to get working at a stronger, more realistic level. Capricorn is the sign of business and Mars is the activating energizer. On 1/24, Mars and Saturn form a supportive pattern, which is particularly beneficial to those with planets in Capricorn, Aries and Virgo. This is a time for all of us to become more determined and more strategic. This business climate is not for sissies. With Pluto in Capricorn for the next 14 years, business will change profoundly and permanently, much of it through the action of government. With Saturn the only planet not in the transpersonal signs of Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces, we are all feeling a bit out of control and at the mercy of fate. Now is the time to reorganize, reprioritize and develop a new philosophy of life that brings about optimism at a time of change.
