Wondrous changes are afoot
And our president is leading by example. I can't get over that wonderful headline at the top of the Greatest list on the DU homepage: "(Update) Homeless Fort Myers woman (Henrietta Hughes) offered help after Obama's town hall". She spoke to President Obama and he said she would get help.

Not only that, but the responses in the thread (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x3732449) show that others now want to give the same kind of help whenever and wherever they can, following Obama's lead. It's happening, friends! Pretty soon we'll reach that hundredth monkey! This is so exciting.

1. Yes indeed!
But I don't get the reference to the hundredth monkey. Can you enlighten me, O Master MorningGlow?

But I can turn you on to the hundredth monkey theory. :D

Basically, there was a story a while ago about a Japanese study done on monkeys living on several islands. One monkey on one island figured out that if she dropped her sweet potato in the sand and it got all gritty, she could wash it in a stream. Other monkeys on the island learned how to do it too.

But then other monkeys on other islands, with whom the first monkeys had no contact (of course), started doing the same thing. HOW did they pick that up? This would appear to confirm the existence of a group consciousness.

The "hundredth monkey" reference is the belief that once a certain number of beings start acting a certain way (the number 100 is used just for convenience's sake--could be more, could be less), it will flip the entire population's behavior, and then everyone will start adopting the new behavior telepathically.

Today sweet potato washing, tomorrow taking care of one another! :woohoo:

On edit: There's some contention about whether this story is true or not. I say it doesn't matter--it's the theory that counts. The idea is entirely possible!

3. Yes, we now have someone who models behavior
that will help all. If we would all remember that it doesn't take much to do something to help....

4. I believe that for sure, Ayeshahaqqiqa!
It still amazes me that just the constant pouring in of small donations for Obama kept his campaign going - a big thing from so many little packages of faith/money. Hoorah for the little help along the way!

16. There's a rash of star-giving in the Lounge
As soon as someone comments that they've lost their star, someone (anonymously) gives them one. It's quite cool. Like a Secret Santa. :D

7. Here's another report of kindness in GD!
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x5030917

A Louisiana man finds a homeless man living on his property, but doesn't call the police.
Instead, Jim Stewart moved the homeless man, Kenny Woods, from under his porch to inside the home. snip
"People don't realize they're just a paycheck away from being where I'm at," said Woods.

8. And! Something else I just thought of!
(Doncha just love how I keep responding to my own OP?)

So this thing I thought of--we're now communing with animals as well. Within 24 hours I saw two animal stories that reminded me we're also going to be "getting back to the Garden". First, the wounded deer that walked into the PetSmart for first aid (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29120004/), and then the koala that "asked" for help from a firefighter at the scene of the Australian wildfire (http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5jVp5cEZx82iGqdb0H_R7uWxRu5TgD9693GT80).

This is so cool, you guys. I'm just about to burst with warm fuzzies...

10. Those animal stories are very special
The deer came inside the PetSmart and vets stitched up her wounds. I found it amazing that she somehow understood that these people take care of animals, went there and stoically received treatment.
The koala stories are also amazing. In addition to the firefighter story you mentioned, another koala knocked on someone's door and a woman put out a pan of water for it. The koala climbed into the pan, as though it was taking a bath; the koala looked so relieved.

Do you remember a story a couple of years ago about a mother duck who went up to a policeman in England and led him over to a storm drain? Her babies had fallen in there and she wanted him to get them out for her. I found that story to be in the same vein as the deer story -- the animal sought out a particular type of person to help it.

17. Animals know who will help them
A Siamese mix kitten found me at the library once in Salt Lake. I say she found me because she came crying to me as I was walking to my car. When I opened the door she just crawled in. I was scared that I'd run over her if I put her out. My plan was to drop her off at the animal shelter which was on my way home. But when I got there I didn't want to do that, so I just took her all the way home with me. We already had two old cats, so I took her to my neighbor, another cat lady. She adopted her on the spot and still had her when I moved about 8 years ago.

11. Henrietta Hughes now has a place to live instead of her car!
Hughes’s plea has been answered. Chene Thompson, the wife of State Rep. Nick Thompson (R), has offered her former residence to Hughes. “Basically, I offered Ms. Hughes and her son the opportunity to stay in my home rent free, for as long as they need to,” said Thompson. “I’m not a millionaire, I’m not rich, but this is what I can do for someone if they need it.”

It surprised me a republicon's wife would be so generous.

:woohoo: for Wondrous Changes!:woohoo:

12. That's so great to hear!
Thanks for the update, MM. The last I heard was Limbaugh badmouthing her, saying she asked Obama for "a new car and a new kitchen".

It's astounding me how divided our worlds are becoming. In addition to Limbaugh's hate speech, I made the mistake of reading the comments on E! Online in response to Michelle Obama's lovely Vogue cover. So much hate...they were saying Michelle had no class but Barbara and Laura were well-dressed and classy ladies. :scared: Our realities are diverging drastically.

I like our reality much better. :D

13. It really boggles my mind how some people revel in their hatred
Henrietta seems as though she has been the target of Hate-Wing radio. All because she was asking our President for help.

As President Obama has said "For over two decades, he's subscribed to that old, discredited Republican philosophy - give more and more to those with the most and hope that prosperity trickles down to everyone else. In Washington, they call this the Ownership Society, but what it really means is - you're on your own. Out of work? Tough luck. No health care? The market will fix it. Born into poverty? Pull yourself up by your own bootstraps - even if you don't have boots. You're on your own."

As far as the Bushie women and their sense of "fashion" :puke:

I :loveya: our reality much better as well. Our reality of Love and Light will shine on the darkness of hatred and expose the darkness once and for all.
